Who Might Get Herpes Simplex
People of any age can contract herpes simplex. You are more likely to get the virus if you:
- Were assigned female at birth.
- Have had multiple sex partners.
- Started having sex at a young age.
- Have a history of any sexually transmitted infection .
- Have a weakened immune system.
- Dont use condoms for intercourse and dental dams for oral sex.
Who gets HSV-1, commonly known as oral herpes?
Anyone can get HSV-1. Most people contract HSV-1 during childhood. It spreads when an adult who has the virus has close contact with a child, such as when a family member kisses a child.
Who gets HSV-2, commonly known as genital herpes?
Genital herpes affects sexually active teens and adults of all genders and races. It can spread if you have multiple sexual partners and dont use condoms or dental dams.
People assigned female at birth are more at risk. Delicate vaginal tissue can tear, making it easier for the infection to get in. Black people who were AFAB are especially vulnerable, with an estimated 1 in 2 people AFAB between the ages of 14 and 49 infected with HSV-2.
Manifestations Of Herpes Simplex Labialis
Herpes simplex labialis outbreaks generally proceed in several predictable stages.5 For a large number of patients, the first stage is the prodrome. In this stage, the patient experiences a set of problems that precede the actual appearance of the lesion. Prodromal symptoms include any or all of the following: 1) pruritus of the lips or of the skin around the mouth 2) a tingling sensation near the lips and/or mouth area 3) burning near the lips or the perioral region 4) inflammation or erythema and 5) hypersensitivity of the area.3,5 The prodromal symptoms are often located at the exact spot where the lesion is shortly due to erupt.
The most common site for herpes simplex labialis is found in the namelabialis, referring to the lip. More specifically, the area is the mucocutaneous junction where intraoral tissues abut the upper and lower lips, an area also referred to as the vermilion border.3,6 Patients with recurrent herpes simplex labialis usually report that the prodrome and lesion occur at the same site from episode to episode. Occasionally, they break out on the skin surrounding the nose or cheek, and intraoral tissues such as the gingiva may be affected.3
The prodromal stage of herpes simplex labialis may also include general symptoms, such as sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, malaise, and odynophagia .3,5 The prodrome can last for as long as 1 to 2 days.

Is There A Cure Or Treatment For Herpes
Theres no cure for the herpes virus yet. A herpes vaccine doesnt currently exist, as the herpes virus has more complicated DNA than most infections, creating challenges for researchers.
However, medication can help with symptoms, like sores, and outbreaks. Medication also lowers the risk of transmission to others. You can take most medications for herpes orally, though you may also apply some as a cream or receive them by injection.
Rule #: Dont Touch It
Touching the sores can increase the chance that you spread the virus to other parts of your body or to other people. Make sure to wash your hands frequently. Also, you can use a cotton swab or a finger cot to apply cream or ointment to the affected area instead of your fingers to avoid spreading the virus to other regions .

Tissue Analysis By Gas Chromatography
Using the conditions described in Section 188.8.131.52.1, automated CE-MS was established and used for the unattended analysis of large sample sets. In a 3-month period, over 500 separate tissue extracts were analyzed with triplicate analytical replicates. The entire study was performed using a single CE capillary and the only maintenance that was performed was the wiping down of the ESI source on a weekly basis. A typical electropherogram for M. truncatula liquid suspension cell culture extracts is shown in Figure 7 . The first amino acid elutes in the 6.5â6.8 min window and the last amino acid elutes in the 11.8â12.8 min window. These variations in migration times were observed with extensive rinsing with both strong base and acid at the end of each analysis. Peak identification and quantification were performed using extracted ion chromatograms. The extracted ion m/z ) values for each amino acid assayed by CE-MS and GC-MS are listed in Table 6.

Is There A Cure For Herpes Simplex
There is no cure for herpes simplex. Once you have the virus, its a lifelong infection.
What is the outlook for people with herpes simplex?
For many people, the first herpes outbreak is the most severe. Many outbreaks are less frequent and milder after the first year of infection. Some people may have only one outbreak and never have another again.
Herpes infection doesnt usually pose a serious health risk. The risk of a health complication due to herpes is higher in infants and if you have HIV/AIDS, cancer or an organ transplant.

Nonprescription Products For Hsv
The patient who wishes to self-treat HSV-1 has several options.5 The pharmacist can recommend protectants to keep the area moist. These include petrolatum, zinc oxide, allantoin, calamine, and cocoa butter. Some products also contain external analgesics/local anesthetics to decrease the discomfort, such as benzocaine, benzyl alcohol, camphor, dyclonine, menthol, phenol, or pramoxine. Products containing these two groups of ingredients are safe and effective for patients down to the age of 2 years.5 One such product is Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment, which promises to relieve cold sores.7 It contains phenol, allantoin, camphor, and menthol. Another is Campho-Phenique Cold Sore Treatment, containing camphor and phenol.8 These interventions provide some palliative relief, but they are unable to reduce the time to healing.9
Docosanol 10% is a radically different nonprescription cold sore therapy, available as the trade-named product Abreva. Docosanol, a fatty alcohol, acts through a mechanism that is unique among all prescription and OTC products currently avail-able: inhibition of viral fusion.2,8,10 This novel mechanism does not lead to emergence of resistant HSV-1.2 Patients are best served by a product that can shorten the duration of discomfort and minimize the disfigurement.11 Research has confirmed that docosanol can achieve these goals patients who apply it within 12 hours of onset of symptoms will experience a reduced time to healing compared to controls.9,12
How Is Genital Herpes Treated
There is no cure for genital herpes. However, it is possible to reduce the symptoms using anti-viral medicine. This is most effective when started within 72 hours of the first symptoms.
Medicines can help control outbreaks if they are frequent or severe. Anti-viral medicine can reduce the risk from passing the virus on to a sexual partner.
The symptoms can also be helped by:
- gently bathing the area with a warm salt solution
- pain medicine, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
- local anaesthetic ointment or cream
- urinating while sitting in a warm bath, if urination is painful

Can It Lie Dormant
The herpes virus can lie dormant in the body for years before people experience any symptoms.
After people have the first outbreak of herpes, the virus then lies dormant in the nervous system. Any further outbreaks are due to the virus reactivating, which causes symptoms to appear.
Symptoms are usually less severe during repeat outbreaks. Sores also clear up more quickly, often within 37 days. This is due to the antibodies the body produces to fight the first outbreak of herpes. The body can then use these antibodies to respond more quickly to future outbreaks.
There is currently no cure for herpes. Even if a person stops experiencing symptoms, the virus will remain inside their body.
It is also important to point out that herpes is transmissible even when no sores or other symptoms are present. For this reason, early prevention is advisable.
To help reduce the chance of this happening, people can use condoms or dental dams during sex.
Condoms and dental dams do not offer complete protection against the herpes virus, as herpes can live on areas around the genitals. However, these methods do reduce the likelihood of contracting the infection or passing it on.
Both people can then take additional steps to reduce the likelihood of transmission. These steps may include:
Treatment For Oral Herpes
The antiviral medications available in pill form have been specifically developed for the treatment of genital herpes. However, it is not uncommon for healthcare providers to prescribe the antiviral drugs to those who have frequent or severe outbreaks of oral herpes.
A recent study found valacyclovir to be effective for treating oral herpes in a one-day treatment of 2 grams taken at the first sign of a cold sore, and then again about 12 hours later.
There are two topical antiviral medications prescribed for the treatment of oral HSV symptoms: acyclovir ointment and penciclovir cream. Both work to speed up the healing process and reduce the viral activity. These topical drugs are put directly on the lesions themselves, but can also be used at the onset of prodrome.
Other topical treatments for oral herpes are available over-the-counter , but are not antiviral compounds like acyclovir and penciclovir. Some also contain ingredients that numb the area and induce temporary relief from the discomfort of an outbreak. Unfortunately, some OTC treatments may actually delay the healing time of symptoms because they can further irritate the area with repeated applications. There is only one OTC FDA-approved cream, called Abreva®, which has been clinically proven to help speed the healing process.

What Is Acyclovir Ointment
Acyclovir ointment is an antiviral medicine that works by stopping the herpes simplex virus from multiplying in your cells. And while this antiviral treatment can reduce the symptoms of outbreaks and shorten how long they last, theres no permanent cure for herpes .
Herpes viruses lay dormant inside your body and can wake up and cause an outbreak. While the triggers can be different for everyone and might sometimes be hard to identify, some things can increase your chances of experiencing a cold sore .
Episodic Topical Treatment For Recurrent Herpes Labialis
Topical treatment for herpes labialis is less effective than oral treatment. An RCT of treatment with topical penciclovir 1% cream showed healing was marginally faster in the penciclovir group compared with placebo .16 The participants were adults in otherwise good health who had at least three episodes of herpes labialis per year. They applied penciclovir cream or placebo within one hour of the first sign or symptom of a recurrence, and then every two hours while awake for four days. Resolution of symptoms occurred more rapidly in the penciclovir group regardless of whether the medication was applied in the early or late stage. Penciclovir cream applied every two hours while awake reduced median duration of pain from 4.1 to 3.5 days, sped up the healing of classic lesions from 5.5 to 4.8 days, and did not change median time of viral shedding .16
Docosanol cream is a saturated, 22-carbon, aliphatic alcohol with antiviral activity. It is available without prescription. One RCT of 743 patients with herpes labialis showed a faster healing time in patients treated with docosanol 10% cream compared with placebo cream , as well as reduced duration of pain symptoms .17 More than 90 percent of patients in both groups healed completely within 10 days.17 Treatment with docosanol cream, when applied five times per day and within 12 hours of episode onset, is safe and somewhat effective.

How To Tell Your Partner About The Herpes
Most people feel that their love lives are over once they discover they have herpes. Well, that is not the truth. Herpes patients have romantic relationships with one another or with persons without the STI.
Having conversations about STDs is not fun, but it is essential to tell your partner if you are infected. That way, you might prevent the condition from spreading.
Here are practical tips that might help to talk about it:
- Remain calm: Having the STI is a health condition and does not mean you are promiscuous. Therefore, go into the conversation with a positive and relaxed attitude. You can start the conversation by asking your partner if they have even had or been tested before.
- Know the facts: Be sure to read all the facts. It will help you let your sexual partner know there are methods to manage the condition and prevent transmission.
- Timing: Choose a time when you will not be interrupted or distracted and in a private place. If you are anxious, you can first talk through your friend or practice speaking in front of a mirror. It helps you know what you are confident in saying.
- If you think your partner might injure you, you can tell them using a phone call, text message, or email.

Whats The Difference Between Cold Sores And Genital Herpes
Cold sores and genital herpes have many similarities. Theyre both members of the Herpesviridae family of DNA viruses, so they share many of the same characteristics and symptoms, including recurring infections and painful sores.
However, each condition is caused by a different strain of the herpes simplex virus . Cold sores are classified as herpes simplex virus type 1 while genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 .
Cold sores are easily spread through simple touch and typically develop on or around the mouth. A tingling or burning sensation marks the first sign a sore about to erupt. Cold sores tend to cause pain and discomfort for seven to ten days until they burst, scab, and heal.
Genital herpes, meanwhile, is most often transmitted through intimate contact with a sexual partner and causes sores and blisters to develop around the genital area. These painful sores eventually break open and may cause flu-like symptoms. After the first outbreak, recurring genital herpes outbreaks tend to heal within three to seven days. The number of outbreak periods may even decrease over time.
