Clinical Presentation And Examination

Candidiasis presents with vulvar itching, burning, dyspareunia, and dysuria. Discharge is variable but is typically described as thick, white, and clumpy, with little odor, and often adherent to the vaginal walls. The mucosa is tender and inflamed and may show signs of traumatic excoriation.

Trichomoniasis presents with a profuse frothy yellow, green, or gray malodorous discharge. Vulvar erythema and edema are commonly present, but the classic strawberry cervix is only seen in a minority of cases.

Bacterial vaginosis presents with a profuse, malodorous discharge described as fishy. Pruritus is mild, with the thin discharge adherent to the vaginal walls.

Is it safe to use triamcinolone on children?

Use a condom and you are the least likely to infect other people. No it can only transmit to children through birth and even that is rare. Dont use Triamcinolone anymore if you can help it as overuse can cause real problems. We read about it here all the time because it can thin the skin. I would try Psoriaflora cream or clear 100% aloe vera.

Inclusion And Exclusion Criteria

Original research articles of randomized controlled clinical trials or controlled clinical trials comparing the effectiveness of topical corticosteriods in addition to antiviral versus antiviral alone or placebo for the treatment of RHL were eligible for inclusion. Pilot clinical trial studies with similar interventions and outcomes were also included. We excluded observational studies and studies that evaluated the treatment for primary herpes labialis, as well as case reports, conference presentations, and editorials. Studies of healthy immuno-competent adolescents and adults with a history of RHL were included, irrespective of gender, socioeconomic status, and race. Two types of interventions were considered for the inclusion: combined therapy versus antiviral therapy alone or combined therapy versus placebo. The primary outcomes of interest were the development of classical lesions and reduction in pain. Secondary outcomes were healing time, adverse events, and reduction in size of the lesions.

All authors were involved in determining inclusion.

How To Prevent Cold Sores

Cold sores can have many different triggers, including stress and long periods of sun exposure. Noticing and managing these triggers, when possible, may help reduce the frequency of cold sores.

If sun exposure is a trigger, using a lip balm that contains SPF and a sunscreen on the face may help.

Cold sores are highly contagious. To prevent the spread, a person should not:

  • touch the cold sore, unless they are applying medication or a remedy
  • kiss or have oral sex, as the virus can spread during these activities

After touching a cold sore, wash the hands thoroughly with soap and water.

A person can typically treat their cold sore at home with over-the-counter medication or home remedies. However, consider seeing a doctor if a cold sore:

  • is large or very painful
  • is not healing on its own
  • keeps coming back

People with weakened immune systems should also speak with a doctor about the need for prescription antiviral medications.

Here, we look at some common questions about cold sore creams.

New Cream Disables Herpes Virus: Study

3 Min Read

WASHINGTON – Researchers say they have developed a cream that might prevent herpes infection for as long as a week — a potentially big step in protecting women from the sexually transmitted infection.

The cream uses a new kind of therapy called RNA interference to turn off genes that the virus uses to invade cells, the researchers reported on Wednesday.

The cream, being developed by Massachusetts-based Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc, protected mice from herpes simplex 2, the virus that causes genital herpes, Deborah Palliser of Harvard Medical School in Boston and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and colleagues reported.

A vaginal microbicide able to protect against HSV-2 transmission could contribute significantly to controlling sexually transmitted diseases, Pallisers team wrote in the journal Cell Host & Microbe.

The World Health Organization estimates that 536 million people worldwide are infected with genital herpes, a painful and incurable virus which is highly infectious and can kill newborns.

Herpes viruses head straight to nerve cells, where they stay latent for the life of an animal or person, often causing periodic outbreaks.

Related viruses are herpes simplex 1, which causes cold sores, and varicella, which causes chicken pox and returns in middle or old age as herpes zoster to cause shingles.

Acyclovir and related drugs can suppress symptoms and are available as both creams or pills but have not been shown to prevent infection.
