Apollo Hospitals | All You Need To Know About Herpes | Dr. Ravikiran Barigala

Small microorganisms can cause STDs. Some of these microorganisms can live in your saliva, or they can cause sores in your mouth. This makes it easier for them to spread between people when they kiss, especially during deep, open-mouthed kissing.

Lets break it down into what STDs you can and cant get from kissing.

Living With Herpes And Still Living Your Best Life

Having herpes is actually a blessing.

Here me out on this one. I know youre not believing me if you were just diagnosed with herpes. And I didnt see it that way at all back in 2011. Ive talked to thousands of people who have been diagnosed with herpes and it always starts out the same way. It starts out as, my life is over and how do I cure this. Ive talked to people who are suicidal, . Basically Ive seen all levels of devastation from a herpes diagnosis.

I see this time and time again. And I myself had my own issues that I had to work through. I had issues with money, binge eating, self confidence and dating the same guys. I put all of my blame on the fact that I had herpes. I believed that I had to stay with the guy who gave me herpes even though it was a horrible suffocating relationship, I didnât take care of myself health wise and Im still paying for that now, and my list can go on and on.

It took me getting herpes to wake up and actually begging to live my life.

Now that I had herpes I realized that nothing was going to pull me out of the Eeyore phase that I was in. I was going to continue to binge eat, I was going to continue to stay in an unhealthy relationship I was going to keep letting people treat me poorly etc. That was not what I wanted for my life and that was not what God wanted for my life.

Should You Tell A Partner You Have Herpes

Definitely. Disclose your HSV status to anyone youre getting involved with. I encourage everyone to share their diagnosis with their partners so that everyone can make the healthiest decisions for themselves, Melody A. Baldwin, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, tells Health.

Thats the moral part of the equation. Then theres the legal part, says Terri Warren, an adult nurse practitioner and spokesperson for the American Sexual Health Association. There are so many lawsuits of people suing someone else for giving them herpes, says Warren, also the founder of Westover Research Group in Portland, Oregon. You dont want that to be you.

Myth: People With Herpes Must Be Promiscuous

The reality of any STI is you dont need to sleep around to get infected. This is especially true for herpes, considering theres such a large population of asymptomatic carriers, says Dr. Dardik. While having more partners obviously increases your risk of any kind of any kind of sexually transmitted infection, the reverse doesnt always hold, she points out. In other words, all it takes is one partner.

Recurrence Course Triggers And Timing

Course of Recurrence

Most cases of herpes simplex recur. The site on the body and the type of virus influence how often it comes back. Recurrences of genital herpes are more likely with HSV-2 infection than with HSV-1 infection.

The virus usually takes the following course:

  • Prodrome. The outbreak of infection is often preceded by a prodrome, an early group of symptoms that may include itchy skin, pain, or an abnormal tingling sensation at the site of infection. Headache, enlarged lymph glands, and flu-like symptoms may occur. The prodrome, which may last from 2 hours to 2 days, stops when the blisters develop. About 25% of the time, recurrence does not go beyond the prodrome stage.
  • Outbreak. Recurrent outbreaks feature most of the same symptoms at the same sites as the primary attack, but they tend to be milder and briefer. After blisters erupt, they typically heal in 6 to 10 days. Occasionally, the symptoms may not resemble those of the primary episode, but appear as fissures and scrapes in the skin or as general inflammation around the affected area.

Triggers of Recurrence

Herpes outbreaks can be triggered by different factors. They include sunlight, wind, fever, physical injury, surgery, menstruation, suppression of the immune system, and emotional stress. Oral herpes can be triggered within about 3 days of intense dental work, particularly root canal or tooth extraction.

Timing of Recurrences

Is Genital Herpes Caught From A Cold Sore

If a person with a cold sore on the mouth does oral sex he or she can give his/her partner cold sores on the genitals which is genital herpes. Also, cold sores on the face may be caught from someone with genital herpes through oral sex.

Only the face of a person with cold sores is infectious so they can have sex, but should not kiss or do oral sex when they have a cold sore. See the description of the two types.

Condition #7 Mental Illness

The military takes mental health pretty seriously. Though it is difficult to cover every single mental illness in detail, for the most part, if there has been an official diagnosis and treatment for a mental illness, joining the U.S. Military may be a challenge.

It can also present a challenge for current members that are diagnosed with certain mood disorders or behavioral problems after getting enlisted.

Along with depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders suicidal thoughts and self-harm are critical factors that are gauged.

Naturally, the U.S. Military is pretty reluctant to accept anyone with a history of self-harm or suicidal thoughts, regardless of how long ago they occurred.

Physicians are allowed to exercise some discretion during an examination if they believe previous circumstances, especially one time situations, may be truly in the past and would not impede on their performance in the military moving forward.

Other mental health concerns that may affect military service include:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Personality disorders: These include things like Paranoid Schizophrenia, Borderline personality disorder, Antisocial personality disorder, and Dependent personality disorder.
  • Eating disorders: Including Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge eating, Pica, and Rumination disorder.

Stds That Can Spread Easily Through Kissing

Cold Sores | Oral Herpes | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Treatment
  • Herpes simplex virus 1 : This is a common virus that spreads easily in body fluids. Its easy to get from kissing. You can also get it from touching infected items like dishes, towels, or shaving razors. HSV-1 is very common. About 2 out of every 3 people in the world have HSV-1. It can cause painful blisters in your mouth , but most people with HSV-1 dont have any symptoms or even know they have it.

  • Human papillomavirus : HPV is a virus that usually spreads through sexual contact but it can also spread through deep kissing. In 9 out of 10 people with HPV, the virus will go away on its own without ever causing problems. If it doesnt go away, some types of HPV can lead to mouth and throat cancer.

The only sure way to keep from getting genital herpesor any other sexually transmitted infection is to not have sex. If you do have sex, practice safer sex.

  • Before you start a sexual relationship, talk with your partner about STIs. Find out whether he or she is at risk for them. Remember that a person can be infected without knowing it.
  • If you have symptoms of an STI, don’t have sex.
  • Don’t have sex with anyone who has symptoms or who may have been exposed to an STI.
  • Don’t have more than one sexual relationship at a time. Having several sex partners increases your risk for infection.
  • Use condoms. Condom use lowers the risk of spreading or becoming infected with an STI.
  • Don’t receive oral sex from partners who have cold sores.

Taking medicine for herpes may lower the number of outbreaks you have and can also prevent an episode from getting worse. It also lower the chances that you will infect your partner.

If you are pregnant, you should take extra care to avoid getting infected. You could pass the infection to your baby during delivery, which can cause serious problems for your newborn. If you have an outbreak near your due date, you probably will need to have your baby by caesarean section. If your genital herpes outbreaks return again and again, your doctor may talk to you about medicines that can help prevent an outbreak during pregnancy.

Herpes In The Military

Hi Iâm 27 years old and got sort of diagnosed a year ago with herpes. Iâm in the military and the doctors are really any help, iv never been officially tested because they donât really know anything and just shrug it off saying there is no test. I know itâs herpes, of that Iâm sure. I just wish I I know whether it was HSV1 or 2. I have been on valcyclovir for the last year which has been great but I guess being a newby and having absolutely 0 people to talk to I freak out over the littlest feeling down there and never truly know if Iâm getting another outbreak. I have been reading a lot of posts on here and wow I wish I wasnât in the military, my first outbreak lasted about 12 days and I had to wear 30 pounds of gear as a military police officer constantly walking and moving in extreme heat while absolutely dying on the inside as I couldnât tell a soul. I donât tell people about my own diagnosis but I am a huge advocate for teaching people about herpes now, anyone who says eww gross I teach them what it really is and that the stigma is stupid. I posted this just looking for other people to talk and relate to, know Iâm not the only oneâ¦

Military Bases With High Std Rates

Can You Join The Military If You Have Herpes

Some of the highest STD rates in the country are centered around military bases. One study conducted by Inner Body Research doesnt list military bases specifically, but does point out there are high concentrations of STDs where military personnel reside. Some of these areas are:

    • Killeen, Texas was at number six
    • Shreveport, Louisiana number eight
    • Fayetteville, North Carolina ninth place
    • Columbus, Georgia twelfth place
    • Columbia, South Carolina at the fifteenth place

Young people in the military are more likely to contract STDs than civilians of the same age

Research has shown that military personnel are more likely to contract STDs than civilians of the same age. In fact, military men and women have a 64% chance of contracting an STD from other men and women in their unit. The dating pool is very small, especially when youre stuck with each other overseas.

Thats pretty scary for young people who are about to join the armed forces: the longer theyre in, the less likely they are to have sex without protection. But, most sexual practices of people become safer as they get older.

HPV infections and genital herpes went down with increased age in the military, but chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis infections increased. This could be attributed to the HPV vaccine being administered amongst military members.
