Can You Use Lidocaine On Genital Herpes

What Can I Do To Prevent Frequent Herpes Recurrences

5 Warning Signs of Genital Herpes

There is no need to change your lifestyle or take steps to prevent recurrences until you know whether or not you are going to get any. You will see plenty of internet sites offering dubious treatments that are unnecessary and probably have no effect for treating herpes.

These suggestions to help control symptoms come from people with genital herpes, based on their own experiences. The HVA cannot confirm that any of them will work for you, but we believe they are worth considering:

What Are Some Things I Need To Know Or Do While I Take Lidocaine And Hydrocortisone Rectal Cream And Gel

  • Tell all of your health care providers that you take lidocaine and hydrocortisone rectal cream and gel. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
  • Talk with your doctor before you use other drugs or products on your skin.
  • Do not scratch or rub the skin while it is numb. Do not let it get very hot or very cold.
  • Do not use lidocaine and hydrocortisone rectal cream and gel for longer than you were told by your doctor.
  • This medicine may cause harm if swallowed. If lidocaine and hydrocortisone rectal cream and gel is swallowed, call a doctor or poison control center right away.
  • A severe blood problem called methemoglobinemia has happened with drugs like this one. The risk may be raised in people who have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, heart problems, or lung problems. The risk may also be raised while taking certain other drugs and in infants younger than 6 months of age. Tell your doctor if you have ever had methemoglobinemia.
  • Use with care in children. Talk with the doctor.
  • If you are 65 or older, use lidocaine and hydrocortisone rectal cream and gel with care. You could have more side effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks to you and the baby.

Treatment If The Blisters Come Back

Go to a GP or sexual health clinic if you have been diagnosed with genital herpes and need treatment for an outbreak.

Antiviral medicine may help shorten an outbreak by 1 or 2 days if you start taking it as soon as symptoms appear.

But outbreaks usually settle by themselves, so you may not need treatment.

Recurrent outbreaks are usually milder than the first episode of genital herpes.

Over time, outbreaks tend to happen less often and be less severe. Some people never have outbreaks.

Some people who have more than 6 outbreaks in a year may benefit from taking antiviral medicine for 6 to 12 months.

If you still have outbreaks of genital herpes during this time, you may be referred to a specialist.

Who Might Get Herpes Simplex

Lidocaine Pain Cream For Genital Herpes

People of any age can contract herpes simplex. You are more likely to get the virus if you:

  • Were assigned female at birth.
  • Have had multiple sex partners.
  • Started having sex at a young age.
  • Have a history of any sexually transmitted infection .
  • Have a weakened immune system.
  • Dont use condoms for intercourse and dental dams for oral sex.

Who gets HSV-1, commonly known as oral herpes?

Anyone can get HSV-1. Most people contract HSV-1 during childhood. It spreads when an adult who has the virus has close contact with a child, such as when a family member kisses a child.

Who gets HSV-2, commonly known as genital herpes?

Genital herpes affects sexually active teens and adults of all genders and races. It can spread if you have multiple sexual partners and dont use condoms or dental dams.

People assigned female at birth are more at risk. Delicate vaginal tissue can tear, making it easier for the infection to get in. Black people who were AFAB are especially vulnerable, with an estimated 1 in 2 people AFAB between the ages of 14 and 49 infected with HSV-2.

What Can I Do If I Have Herpes Simplex 2

Many people who find out they have herpes feel depressed knowing they’ll always have the virus and can give it to others. But you arent alone. Herpes is one of the most common STIs, both in the U.S. and worldwide. If you have herpes, you should:

  • Learn all you can about it. Information will help you to manage your disease and feel better about yourself.
  • Talk about your illness with your doctor.

If you have herpes, you can still:

  • Have sex if you use a condom or dental dam , and you tell your partner about your illness. Some couples, who have sexual relations only with each other, may choose not to use condoms even though one partner has herpes. Because each situation is different, you should ask your doctor if this is the right choice for you in your relationship.
  • Have children. People with herpes can still give birth to healthy babies. If you have herpes and plan to have children, discuss your illness with your healthcare provider.

If you have herpes, you should also get checked for HIV and other STIs .

First Episode Of Genital Herpes

The initial episode is the first episode of genital infection with either HSV-1 or HSV-2 . Primary genital herpes is the first episode in an individual with no pre-existing antibodies to either HSV type. A non-primary first episode is the first infection in an individual with pre-existing antibodies to the other HSV type.45

Why Genital Herpes Comes Back

Genital herpes is caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Once you have the virus, it stays in your body.

It will not spread in your body to cause blisters elsewhere. It stays in a nearby nerve and causes blisters in the same area.

If you can, avoid things that trigger your symptoms.

Triggers can include:

  • surgery on your genital area
  • a weakened immune system for example, from having chemotherapy for cancer

How To Avoid Passing On Genital Herpes

Protecting Against Herpes

There are several steps you can take to reduce the chances of passing genital herpes on to your sexual partner, including:

  • always using condoms when you have sex
  • taking suppressive antiviral medicines and
  • avoiding sex whenever you have symptoms.

However, while these steps will help reduce the chance of spreading the infection, there is still a chance that you could pass on the genital herpes virus through sexual contact.

How Does Herpes Simplex Spread

Herpes spreads through close contact with a person who has the infection. The virus can be found in skin and saliva. If you have herpes simplex, you are most likely to pass the virus to another person when you have sores. But you can infect someone else even if you have no symptoms. Healthcare providers call this asymptomatic viral shedding.

People may get HSV-1 through

  • Touching a persons skin near the mouth.
  • Sharing food utensils, lip balm or razors.
  • If you receive oral sex from someone who has a cold sore, it may spread a herpes infection to your genitals.

People may get HSV-2 through

  • Oral sex with someone whos infected.
  • Touching open sores, including while breastfeeding.
  • Childbirth by a mother or gestational parent who has an active infection.

You cant get genital herpes from objects like toilet seats. But you could pass genital herpes through shared sex toys.

Suppressive Therapy And Transmission Risk Reduction

The following points are to be considered:

  • suppressive therapy aims to prevent episode recurrence
  • is appropriate for patients who experience distress or problematic symptoms with each episode
  • suppressive therapy with valaciclovir has been shown to reduce the risk of transmission to sero-negative partners by 50% by reducing recurrences and asymptomatic viral shedding
  • suppressive therapy may be considered in HIV and HSV2 sero-discordant couples, and in HSV2 positive patients with an HSV2 negative pregnant partner
  • therapy should be reviewed every 6 to 12 months for efficacy and ongoing need
  • suppressive therapy does not alter the long term recurrence rate and severity of episodes once off treatment
  • is safe if taken in the long term.

Standard therapy

Valaciclovir 500 mg orally daily OR Famciclovir 250 mg orally 12 hourly

Valaciclovir is superior in reducing viral shedding. Failure to control recurrence on standard therapy may be overcome by doubling the dose.

In HIV infection

Valaciclovir 500 mg orally 12 hourly OR Famciclovir 500 mg orally 12 hourly .

How To Get Through Your First Outbreak

When you notice symptoms of an outbreak for the very first time, it can be worrying and unnerving. The most important thing to remember is that while this outbreak can last 2-4 weeks, itâs always the most severe and subsequent outbreaks wonât be as bad or as long. Additionally, some people never really have further outbreaks and many people only have 1 or 2 a year.

The first outbreak can be very painful and can make urinating very sore, especially if urine runs over sores that are open. Your first port of call should be to try over-the-counter painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin, to help to relieve some of the discomfort. In addition to these, you could also try a topical anaesthetic cream, like Lidocaine, to numb sensation in the area.

On a day-to-day basis, itâs important to upkeep a high level of hygiene. Bathe regularly to avoid any open sores getting infected and try not to touch the sores if you do then make sure you wash your hands well afterwards. If you find that towelling dry after a bath or shower is too painful then you could try drying the area with a hairdryer.

While suffering with genital herpes, avoid wearing any tight clothing or those made from synthetic fabrics opt for loose, cotton choices .

How Do I Treat Genital Herpes

For most people antiviral medicine is not necessary either because their body prevents recurrent symptoms or because they find that adopting a healthier life style makes a difference. See What can I do to prevent frequent recurrences? For people who are unlucky and get frequent recurrences, there are two ways that antiviral tablets can be used.

The detailed dosages below are taken directly from the experts guideline on the website of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV.

Science Bit For Lomaherpan Treating Herpes:

Melissa officinalis contains molecules that block the receptor sites on the skin cells. This prevents the herpes virus getting into the cells where it multiplies. If you wish, you can use melissa oil or extract from an aromatherapy supplier .

There is also lemonbalm salve a chapstick formulation might be easier to apply?

Lemon balm was chosen after the makers tested other oils and found that lemon balm did the job best. So they just use lemon balm. Lomaherpan cream is widely used in Europe where lemon balm mint has an assessment report.

It used to be sold in UK chemists. Then this ceased. People whod used it and loved it asked us to find it so we added it to our shop. Each year we sell more, just on word of mouth and repeat orders.

Do Natural Remedies Help

Vagisil Medicated Crème (30g)

There are several options that can be tried to ease the pain. A73612 and Donnor52059 suggest dabbing cornstarch directly on the sores. I cant find any scientific studies that have researched this, but I cant see that it would do any harm.

A73612 also recommends squirting water from a bottle over the sores when you pee. This is a time-honoured method that will help to ease the pain.

Yolandayw mentioned taking a simple painkiller such as paracetamol during an outbreak. Feelbroken advised putting Vaseline on the sores. Lidocaine 5%, a local anaesthetic gel that numbs the area, is another option. Some people find it helpful to put on five minutes before passing urine. You need to get it on prescription and it doesnt suit everyone. Some people develop sensitivity to it which makes the symptoms worse.

Yolandayw also advised using ice as a home remedy. Simply wrap the ice in a tea towel and apply for 5-10 minutes. Never put ice directly on the skin as this can cause ice burn. Drinking plenty of water can also be helpful as it reduces the concentration of urine, making it less painful when you have to pee.

D91907 mentioned putting aloe vera gel on the sores. There is some scientific evidence that aloe vera is useful for both genital and oral herpes.
