Bowman was born in 1933 in Ilanga, Honduras. He first learned of herbal healing and related traditional practices from his grandmother his grandfather was originally from Haiti. Bowman who was of African descent, identified himself as an “African in Honduras”, not as an African Honduran.
Bowman became frustrated with Western medical practices in treating his own illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, impotency and visual impairment and visited an herbalist in Mexico named Alfredo Cortez who confirmed to him that he was dying.
After that, Bowman began his own healing practice in Honduras. He developed a treatment that he called the “African Bio-Electric Cell Food Therapy”, and claimed that it could cure a wide range of diseases, including cancer and AIDS, as well as a variety of chronic conditions and mental illnesses. He also developed related herbal products.
Bowman set up a center in the 1980s near La Ceiba, Honduras, and marketed his herbal products in the United States. He called his center the USHA Research Institute, as located in the village of Usha.
In the early 1980s, AIDS had newly been recognized as a disease as an epidemic started in the United States, with numerous cases in New York and other major cities. Bowman claimed that HIV is not the cause of AIDS and used herbal remedies to treat people.
Bowman Said She Wants To Continue Her Husbands Legacy But Theres Controversy Over Who Is Selling His Authentic Products
On her website, Patsy Bowman says that she worked alongside her husband and wants to continue his legacy. She wrote, in part:
I want to personally thank all of you who have called my office and sent your condolences regarding the passing of my husband Mr. Dr. Sebi. It has been an overwhelming time for us all but the love and light that you guys have wished me and our family is definitely appreciated. We will continue his great legacy and healing of the world. Alfredo Bowman Celebrity Herbalist Obituary
Alfredo Bowman,
who has died aged 82, was better known as Dr Sebi, a self-proclaimed healer and herbalist who claimed to have developed a miraculous treatment called the African Bio-Electric Cell Food Therapy to cure such pathologies as arthritis, asthma, cancer, Aids, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, epilepsy, herpes, heart and vital organ dysfunctions, leukemia, mental disorders, obesity, tumors and a variety of female and male problems.
Official scepticism did little to damage Dr Sebis standing among those who wanted to believe, and his list of celebrity clients included Lisa Left Eye Lopes, of the hip-hop girl group TLC , the actors Steven Seagal, John Travolta and Eddie Murphy and Michael Jackson, whom Dr Sebi claimed to have cured of his addiction to painkillers.
In June 2004 Jackson was reported to be spending $3,960 a night at Loews Miami Beach Hotel meditating and praying with Sebi , to prepare for his forthcoming trial on nine charges of child abuse.
Michael is opening up to him, an unnamed insider was quoted as saying. He hasnt had anyone this close in his life since Bubbles the chimp. Dr Sebi visits Michael each day, sometimes spending hours at a time.
Sebi claimed that the troubled star could hardly stand up before he rescued him. I was told by the cooks that he was falling down and they had to pick him up, he told the US Celebrity Justice show.
The USHA Research Institute subsequently relocated to California.
He is survived by 17 children.

Dr. Sebi was married once before Patsy, to Maa Bowman. She was named in a consent agreement against Sebi by the New York Attorney General. It barred Ogun Herbal Research Institute, Fig Tree Products, Alfredo Bowman, and Maa Bowman and their successors from claiming their products were effective against AIDS, herpes, leukemia, sickle cell anemia, lupus, or other human diseases, or selling their products as such. Maas business has also been caught up in the controversy about who is selling Dr. Sebis authentic products. She gives a different viewpoint in the video above. Maa Sebi is currently with Fig Tree Bio Electric according to the companys website.
It should be noted that according to some sources, Maa and Dr. Sebi were still married and were together for 30 years. In the two hour video below, Maa says that they had three children together and she helped him create his original formula.

Who Is Dr Sebi
Dr. Sebi was born Alfredo Bowman in 1933 in Ilanga, Honduras, and first learned about herbalism from his grandmother, who he claimed was a traditional healer.According to his website, everything Dr. Sebi learned about herbalism was self-taught, and he studied a wide variety of traditions from Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean. Eventually, he immigrated to the United States.
While living in California, Bowman was unsuccessfully treated for various ailments, including diabetes, obesity, and erectile dysfunction. Then, he traveled to Mexico and became connected with Alfredo Cortez, whom he credits with successfully curing him of these ailments. It was Cortezs treatments that inspired Bowman to open an herbalist practice of his own.
Bowman returned to Honduras, where he formulated what would become known as Dr. Sebis Cell Food. His center, the USHA Research Institute, was located in the small town of La Ceiba, but its products were sold almost exclusively in the United States. And it was through these products that he began to amass an enviable list of celebrity clients.

Pablo Medina was arrested at the same time as Dr. Sebi and was released from jail several months after Sebi died.

Not one of these people have any proof or grounds for the accusations against Dr. Sebi or his products. Dr. Sebis Cell Food is today run by people selected and trained by Dr. Sebi himself. The staff at Dr. Sebis Cell Food is managed by Pablo Medina, Dr. Sebis disciple, friend and long time associate. Pablo Medina is the only person who worked with Dr. Sebi when he developed his latest and improved formulas.
Nipsey Hussle And Sebi
Hussle was another celebrity who was taken in by Sebi’s promises. On the song, “Blue Laces 2,” Hussle spits the lyric, “They killed Dr. Sebi, he was teaching health,” and he told The Breakfast Club last year that he was working on a documentary about Sebi.
“Dr. Sebi went to trial in New York because he put in the newspaper that he cured AIDS,” Hussle said in the interview. “He beat the case. Then he went to federal court the next day, and he beat that case. But nobody talks about it.”
Sebi and his company were in fact brought to trial by New York City in 1988 and were found not guilty of “practicing medicine without a license” by a jury. But according to a New York Amsterdam Newsreport, he was only found not guilty on the two counts because the state did not prove that he in fact had attempted to diagnose peoples’ health conditions, which was key to breaking the law. He did not go to trial in federal court, but was taken to court by New York State in 1988 and avoided having to admit guilt by entering into a consent decree in which he agreed to not sell any products in the state making claims to cure diseases. He also agreed to publish new ads in the Amsterdam News offering refunds to former patients .

The conspiracy theories involving Nipsey Hussle derive from Hussle revealing that he was going to make a documentary about Dr. Sebis death before he was gunned down. Thats led some people on Twitter to speculate the documentary gave someone a motive to essentially silence Hussle and his efforts.
This isnt a coincidence! Nipsey Hussle was working on a documentary that will narrate Dr. Sebis Trial in 1985. Dr. Sebi claimed that he could cure AIDS & was allegedly executed by way of U.S. Medical Corporations because his AIDS remedy would take away from their own profits.

Hussle was gunned down on March 31, 2019 in Los Angeles in the parking lot of his Marathon clothing store. A community-minded rapper, he was beloved for his efforts to improve the area.

Dr Sebi Left Behind 17 Children & Was The Subject Of Court Cases
Dr. Sebi left behind quite a brood he had 17 children in all, reports The Source. His wife Patsy Bowman, now carries on his work. You can read more about her here.
Sebi faced legal challenges during his life-time in America as well as Honduras. BET reports that Dr. Sebi, in the 1980s, was accused of practicing medicine without a formal license. He had his critics who did not believe what he was preaching.
In 1988, reports BET, the state of New York even sued Sebi for making unsubstantiated therapeutic claims. What sparked the action? According to BET, he ran paid ads in several New York newspapers in which he claimed that hed cured AIDS.
He was ordered by the New York state attorney to remove the ads. His tangles with the government have sparked some of the conspiracy theories relating to him. You can read some of the court documents in one of the cases here.
Dr Sebi Developed A Cult
Dr. Sebi was many things during his lifetime but, according to The Root, he developed an almost cult-like following with his claims that he had found a natural way to cure many insidious diseases.
According to The Root, this is what Sebi argued: He believed that food is alkaline for the body, and dead foods kill your bodys natural ability to heal and regenerate healing. His website says: Sebi came to the United States as a self-educated man who was diagnosed with asthma, diabetes, impotency, and obesity.
Hed grown disenchanted with western medicine and especially its reliance on pharmaceuticals. After unsuccessful treatments with conventional doctors and traditional western medicine, Sebi was lead to an herbalist in Mexico, his website reads. Finding great healing success from all his ailments, he began creating natural vegetation cell food compounds geared for inter-cellular cleansing and the revitalization of all the cells that make up the human body. Dr. Sebi has dedicated over 30 years of his life to develop a unique methodology that he could only obtain through years of empirical knowledge.
Thus, he developed a list of foods that he considered toxic to the body, and they were processed and synthetic. The Root reports they included alcohol, sugar, fried food, and iodized salt

How Did Dr Sebi Die
La PrensaDr. Sebi was arrested in 2016 on charges of money laundering. He died of pneumonia while in police custody that same year.
In May 2016, Bowman and his associate Pablo Medina Gamboa were charged with money laundering after authorities discovered he was carrying more than $37,000 in unaccounted-for cash. He was immediately transported to a Honduran jail, where he was awaiting arraignment. In June 2016, Bowman fell ill and was taken to a hospital.
Dr. Sebi died from pneumonia complications on August 6, 2016. He was 82 years old. Many of his devout followers believe that the death of Dr. Sebi was a result of the mainstream medical establishment trying to silence him for telling the truth about the industry.
But thats not the only controversy surrounding how Dr. Sebi died. In 2019, rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was working on a documentary about Dr. Sebi, was shot and killed after a dispute with a former friend. And, even though no credible link between Hussles murder and Bowmans death has ever been found, that hasnt stopped conspiracy theorists from connecting the two.
And even after his death, Dr. Sebi remains as popular as ever. His daughter Kellie one of his 17 children continues his work at the Honduran Experience Wellness Center in Atlanta, GA.
