How Did I Get Herpes Simplex
The herpes simplex viruses are extremely contagious and easily spread.
In the United States, more than 57% of people are infected with HSV-1 and more than 16% are infected with HSV-2.
Most people get the virus that causes oral herpes during infancy or childhood. A kiss, even on the cheek, sharing eating utensils, or skin-to-skin contact from a person who carries the HSV-1 virus is often all that is needed to pass the HSV-1 virus to a child. The infected child may or may not develop herpes sores.
A person who has a herpes sore also can spread the HSV-1 virus by sharing objects such as lip balm or a razor.
Genital herpes generally spreads through sexual contact. Most people become infected during sexual intercourse. If a sexual partner has a cold sore or fever blister and performs oral sex, this can spread the HSV virus, causing herpes sores on the genitals.
Pregnant women should tell their doctor if she or her partner has genital herpes. A woman who has genital herpes at childbirth can give the virus to her baby as the baby passes through the birth canal. Precautions taken before birth can prevent this.

How Do I Use Valacyclovir

Taking two 1,000 mg tablets of valacyclovir at the first sign of symptoms and two more 12 hours later is recommended. Valacyclovir is not FDA approved for suppression of oral herpes. You may need to take a lower dose of valacyclovir if you have HIV or kidney disease or if youre elderly, and valacyclovir might not be safe for you at all if you have certain conditions. For HIV-infected patients, the guidelines recommend 1,000 mg of valacyclovir every 12 hours for 510 days. Talk to your provider about your health and always follow their instructions.
How Are Cold Sores Treated
Cold sores cant be cured, but, if symptoms are severe, treatment may help relieve some symptoms. Treatment may include:

Cold sores take about 1 to 3 weeks to heal. The first time they appear, they can take up to 3 weeks to heal. But, when cold sores return, they usually take a week to heal if no medicines are used. Antiviral medications may help, but they need to be started before day 3 or 4 of the blister formation. Antivirals are usually not recommended for otherwise healthy people. Always consult your health care provider or dentist if the sore does not heal or becomes worse as time passes.
