What Are The Symptoms Of Genital Herpes

Herpes virus treatment

Most individuals infected with HSV are asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms that go unnoticed or are mistaken for another skin condition. 9 When symptoms do occur, herpes lesions typically appear as one or more vesicles, or small blisters, on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. The average incubation period for an initial herpes infection is 4 days after exposure. 10 The vesicles break and leave painful ulcers that may take two to four weeks to heal after the initial herpes infection. 5,10 Experiencing these symptoms is referred to as having a first herpes outbreak or episode.

Prognosis Of Genital Herpes

Genital herpes can be treated and managed. Baill stresses that for most people who have healthy immune systems, the high-risk times for giving a sex partner genital herpes are during the first outbreak and during later outbreaks of sores.

Without such an outbreak, the viral load is usually not sufficient to infect a normal, healthy partner, she says. Antiviral medication can be effective at controlling the frequency and the severity of genital herpes outbreaks, Baill says.

For some people, though, even the times when no symptoms are present can be risky ones for transmission.

If you have genital herpes and your partner is taking biologic drugs for rheumatoid arthritis or MS or psoriasis, you may need to be extra careful, says Baill. It may take a lower viral load to infect people taking those medications.

In these situations, she says, you may want to take antiviral drugs in an ongoing way to keep your viral load low and protect your partner.

If left untreated syphilis will advance from its primary stage and get worse over time leading to complicated health problems.

The stages of syphilis are:

  • Primary stage Sores or chancres appear at the site of infection . These appear 3 to 6 weeks after infected, and heal if left untreated.
  • Secondarystage Red or reddish brown rash on the trunk, palms of the hands and soles of the feet may appear. You may experience sore throat, patchy hair loss, swollen lymph nodes, or headaches and fever.
  • Latentstage During this phase, the bacteria are still alive in your body but you may experience no symptoms. The infection can affect your heart, brain, and nerves and can last for years. Not everyone who has syphilis will enter this stage. Some will go directly into the tertiary stage.
  • Tertiarystage Post secondary stage symptoms, the infection remains latent in the body if left untreated. This stage is not contagious, but the infection may have started to damage organs, such as your brain, nerves, eyes, etc. Symptoms of tertiary stage include numbness, problems controlling muscle movements, vision loss and dementia.

Atypical Forms Of Genital Herpes

Atypical forms occur obliterated, in the form of chronic inflammation of the external and internal genitalia . The diagnosis is based on laboratory confirmation of the presence of herpes infection. Atypical forms of genital herpes account for more than half of clinical cases 65%.

The atypical form is characterized by mild swelling, areas of erythema, small-point vesicles, persistent burning and itching, abundant, not amenable to therapy, white. With a prolonged course, there is an increase and soreness of the inguinal lymph nodes.

According to the localization of herpetic rashes , there are 3 stages:

  • Stage I affects the external genitalia
  • Stage III affects the uterus, appendages, bladder, prostate.

The higher the herpetic infection penetrates the genitourinary tract, the more serious the prognosis. An advanced form of genital herpes can lead to a state of immunodeficiency, and in women it increases the risk of infertility, cervical cancer. HSV is dangerous for people with weakened immunity , and who have undergone organ transplantation surgery.

Why Genital Herpes Comes Back

Genital herpes is caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Once you have the virus, it stays in your body.

It will not spread in your body to cause blisters elsewhere. It stays in a nearby nerve and causes blisters in the same area.

If you can, avoid things that trigger your symptoms.

Triggers can include:

  • surgery on your genital area
  • a weakened immune system for example, from having chemotherapy for cancer

How Herpes Is Treated

There is no cure for herpes.

  • The health care provider may prescribe antiviral medicine to help speed up the healing process. It also shortens the time when the virus can spread from the herpes sores.
  • Pain may be treated with medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin or by applying an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the affected area.
  • If sores are in the mouth, avoid foods high in acid, like citrus fruits and juices.
  • The infected area should be kept clean and dry.
  • Wash hands often and avoid touching the sores to prevent spreading the virus.
  • It is important to stay healthy by getting enough rest, having proper nutrition and exercise and managing stress well.

Female Genital Herpes Symptoms

The first outbreak in women will usually occur a few weeks after contracting the infection. Symptoms start with a tingling, burning or itching sensation around the affected area, prior to the emergence of sores.

Additionally, symptoms of a new infection may include fever, body aches and swollen lymph nodes. After an initial episode, which can be severe, symptoms may recur. These symptoms recur periodically, although the frequency, duration and severity of outbreaks are often less severe than the first episode and tend to decrease over time.

How Is Genital Herpes Treated

Herpes has no cure. But antiviral medicines can prevent or shorten outbreaks during the time you take the medicine. Also, daily suppressive therapy for herpes can lower your chance of spreading the infection to your partner.

Your doctor will either give you antiviral medicine to take right after getting outbreak symptoms or to take regularly to try to stop outbreaks from happening. Talk to your doctor about treatment options.

During outbreaks, you can take the following steps to speed healing and prevent spreading herpes to other parts of your body or to other people:

  • Keep sores clean and dry.
  • Try not to touch the sores.
  • Wash your hands after any contact with the sores.
  • Avoid all sexual contact from the time you first notice symptoms until the sores have healed.

The Third Stage Of Genital Herpes

The third stage of genital herpes infection is called the blister stage. As simple as its name, this is where blisters develop in the genital parts of your body. It sometimes begins with small red bumps that become noticeable for the following days. These bumps contain fluid-like pus that causes too much discomfort in the genitals. Avoid having sexual contact if these blisters are present.

Lastly is the healing stage. In the initial outbreak, the healing time can take two to four weeks using antiviral for herpes. However, it will take only a few days for the infected skin surface to retain its regular appearance in the subsequent outbreaks. While the skin is healing, it is necessary to protect it to avoid scarring.

What Does Genital Herpes Look Like When Its Healing

As your herpes outbreak comes to an end, your herpes sores will begin to crust over, scab like a small cut, and eventually go away. The sores can take a week or more to heal.

Your nurse or doctor can give you herpes medicine to help prevent or treat outbreaks, and there are ointments that can help make your sores heal faster and hurt less.

How Can I Protect My Sex Partners

You can take steps to protect others from herpes. Keep in mind that you can spread it even when you dont have symptoms.

Avoid sex during outbreaks: Youre more likely to give your partner herpes while you have an outbreak. Avoid sexual contact from the time you notice the first signs, such as tingling or pain, until the scabs fall off and your skin is back to normal.

Try not to touch your sores: If you do, wash your hands right away. A good cleaning may stop the spread to another part of your body or to your partner.

Use condoms: They wont totally protect your partner, but they can lower the chances of spreading the virus.

Talk to your doctor: They might prescribe a drug to make it less likely youll give herpes to someone else. As with condoms, the medicine wont 100% protect your partner.

What Are The Herpes Outbreak Stages

Herpes Simplex Virus in Depth / Alynn Alexander, MD
  • Lauren Stuttaford

Herpes, otherwise known as the herpes simplex virus, is categorized into two types: herpes simplex virus type 1 and herpes simplex virus type 2 .

The first is mainly transmitted through oral-to-oral contact causing oral herpes but can also cause genital herpes. While HSV-2 is a sexually transmitted infection that causes genital herpes. Both types of the infection are lifelong.

A person infected with herpes, whether oral or genital, might show no symptoms or could progress through the different herpes outbreak stages from blister development to herps healing. However, most herpes infections are asymptomatic.

According to the World Health Organization , an estimated 3.7 billion people under 50 years old have HSV-1 infection globally, and an estimated 491 million people between the ages of 15-49 have HSV-2 infection worldwide.

Astonishingly, the virus causing genital herpes or HSV-2 increases the risk of contracting and transmitting HIV, putting millions at greater risk of contracting an HIV infection.

Lets take a closer look at the herpes outbreak stages.

What Is Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. This infection is best known for the red bumps and white blisters it causes in the genital region, but genital herpes involves much more than just the visible outbreak.

The genital herpes virus progresses through five distinct phases, starting from your primary infection and proceeding through the healing stage.

During an active herpes outbreak, the blisters themselves also go through their own five-stage progression.

Genital Herpes Is Spread By Skin

The virus can be spread when someone with HSV has an episode or an outbreak characterised by having a sore, blister, ulcer or skin split . It can also be spread between episodes, when there is no sore, blister, ulcer or skin split present called asymptomatic viral shedding.

During viral shedding the virus is on the skin surface and can be spread through genital skin-to-skin contact, or from the mouth or face to genital skin during contact.

Herpes and HIV are caused by different viruses. But patients infected with these viruses are more likely to transmit either disease to their sexual partners. Patients with herpes are more vulnerable to HIV infection. People newly diagnosed with herpes should be tested for HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections.

Patients who are infected with both herpes and HIV also may have a higher concentration of HIV viruses in their body because of the interaction between the herpes virus and the HIV virus. When HIV damages a persons immune system, the person may be more likely to shed herpes simplex virus asymptomatically.

Herpes Simplex And Pregnancy

In women who already have genital herpes before becoming pregnant, most can experience a safe pregnancy and vaginal delivery. There is only a minimal risk of the baby being affected. It is important that the diagnosis is discussed with the lead maternity carer so that consideration can be given to Caesarean section if there are lesions present during labour.

The highest risk to the baby is when the first episode of genital herpes occurs in the first few weeks of the pregnancy or in the last few weeks before delivery. These situations should be discussed with a specialist. Genital herpes does not affect fertility.

Can Women Who Have Sex With Women Get Genital Herpes
