How To Speed Up Herpes Healing

Treatment Options For Genital Herpes

Human Herpes Virus 6 (Roseola infantum): All you need to know

Acyclovir was the first antiviral agent to be used in the treatment of genital herpes, and as such, is the most extensively studied of the antiviral agents currently available. This drug is available in topical, oral, and intravenous forms . In the distant past, topical acyclovir was used to treat recurrent genital herpes, but its ineffectiveness has been known for quite some time. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study found that after application of topical acyclovir 6 times daily for 5 days, only the duration of virus shedding from lesions was reduced compared to placebo. Differences between time to lesion crusting, lesion healing, new lesion formation, and cessation of pain were non-significant .

Intravenous acyclovir remains the most effective form of treatment for a primary genital herpes infection, leading to significant reduction in time to cessation of viral shedding and pain. Time to lesion healing is also 6 days faster than with placebo alone . However, as IV administration of acyclovir requires hospitalization, this route is reserved for patients with life-threatening disease or systemic complications .

Treatment If The Blisters Come Back

Go to a GP or sexual health clinic if you have been diagnosed with genital herpes and need treatment for an outbreak.

Antiviral medicine may help shorten an outbreak by 1 or 2 days if you start taking it as soon as symptoms appear.

But outbreaks usually settle by themselves, so you may not need treatment.

Recurrent outbreaks are usually milder than the first episode of genital herpes.

Over time, outbreaks tend to happen less often and be less severe. Some people never have outbreaks.

Some people who have more than 6 outbreaks in a year may benefit from taking antiviral medicine for 6 to 12 months.

If you still have outbreaks of genital herpes during this time, you may be referred to a specialist.

When Should You Call Your Doctor

If you havenât been diagnosed with genital herpes, call your doctor if you have:

  • Painful blisters or sores in the genital or pelvic area.
  • Burning or pain while urinating, or you canât urinate.
  • Reason to think youâve been exposed to genital herpes.

If you have been diagnosed with genital herpes, call your doctor if you are having frequent outbreaks or if you canât pass urine or are constipated.

If you are pregnant and have genital herpes, or if you think you have genital herpes, tell your doctor.

Stage : Ulcer Eruption

This stage can be the most painful cold sore stage, as the blisters burst, leaving open sores.i You may also see a red ring of inflammation around the affected area. Stage 3 is the most infectious stage, so take care to avoid spreading the virus until your cold sore has completely healed and disappeared.

The HSV-1 virus is highly contagious. It spreads through skin-to-skin contact or via the moist inner skin that lines the mouth, eyes or genitals. iv In most cases, the virus causes a mild infection, but it poses a more serious risk for newborns and those with a weakened immune system. It can also be sight-threatening if it reaches your inner cornea, the transparent layer at the front of your eye, and is left untreated.ii

Avoid touching your cold sore and always wash your hands after applying cream or before touching your eyes, genitals, or areas of broken skin. Avoid sexual contact and do not share any personal items that may have come into contact with your saliva, such as cutlery or toothbrushes.iv

Dont pick or peel the scab as you may damage the delicate, new skin underneath, slowing the healing process, and even leading to scarring. Let the scab fall off naturally.

Take Care During Pregnancy

A woman who gets genital herpes while she is pregnant could pass the infection to her baby during delivery. Herpes can make newborns seriously ill.

If you are pregnant, follow these steps:

  • Tell your doctor if you have been exposed to genital herpes or have had an outbreak in the past.
  • Let your doctor know if you are currently having an outbreak, especially if you are in the last part of your pregnancy.
  • Avoid unsafe sex. Herpes is often transmitted by people who dont know they are infected and dont have symptoms. Use condoms.
  • Avoid receiving oral sex from partners who have cold sores. Herpes in newborns can be caused by HSV-1, the virus that most commonly causes cold sores. Most experts advise pregnant women not to receive oral sex in the last 3 months of their pregnancy. It increases their risk of genital infection with HSV-1.

Antiviral medicine can be used safely in pregnancy to reduce the risk of an outbreak at the time of delivery. This lower risk, in turn, makes it less likely that delivery by caesarean section will be needed.

When To See A Doctor

Most of the time, cold sores go away on their own within a couple of weeks. If your cold sore lingers beyond 2 weeks, it might be time to check with your doctor.

If you feel like youre constantly dealing with cold sores several times a year or more thats another good reason to check with your doctor. You may benefit from a prescription-strength antiviral medication.

Other reasons to see your doctor:

  • sores near your eyes
  • sores that have spread to other parts of your body

If you have eczema, which is also called atopic dermatitis, you may have some cracked or bleeding areas on your skin. If HSV-1 spreads into those openings, it can cause complications.

  • Sores that do not heal after 2-4 weeks

Can Genital Herpes Cause Other Problems

If a woman has the first manifestation of genital herpes during pregnancy, she can pass the virus on to her child and experience a premature birth. Half of the children with herpes die or develop nerve damage. A baby born with herpes can have serious brain, skin or eye problems. If babies born with herpes are immediately treated with acyclovir, their chances of being healthy increase. If a pregnant woman has a recurrence during pregnancy, the risk of contagion for childbirth is very low. In any case, if you have this problem and are pregnant, it is advisable to consult your doctor often before, during and after the birth of the baby.

If a woman has a manifestation with lesions on the birth canal or in the adjacent area during labor and delivery, the doctor will proceed with a cesarean section to protect the unborn child. However, most patients with genital herpes show no signs of active virus infection at these times, so they can face a normal birth.

Herpes Outbreaks: How Long Do They Last And How To Treat Them

Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world. Many people have herpes and show no symptoms, which makes the disease very transmittable.

For many men and women, herpes outbreaks can be daunting, embarrassing, and even frustrating. These outbreaks lead to painful sores, embarrassing conversations, and trial and error treatment options.

To best understand how to manage herpes outbreaks, first, you need to be familiar with the STD itself.

What is Herpes?

Herpes is a viral infection that usually causes small, painful blisters on or around the genital or rectal areas. These sores or blisters are commonly referred to as herpes lesions. Herpes lesions can also appear on the mouth or face.

Herpes simplex virus is the most common form of the disease and is transmitted through direct contact with an infected area or through the sharing of contaminated personal items, such as razors, towels, and clothing.

What are the Symptoms of Herpes?

Not everyone with herpes has symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they usually appear within 2 to 12 days after exposure to the virus. Some people with herpes never have any symptoms.

Symptoms include:

Occasionally, herpes simplex virus can cause burning skin sensations, deep aches or sudden twinges in the genital area. When they occur in the thighs or buttocks, they are sometimes compared to sciatica. These symptoms are called prodromes or prodromal symptoms. They are a sign that the virus is trying to reactivate and there may be virus on the skin surface. Sometimes sores will follow, but very often your immune response overcomes the virus before visible signs appear. Stage : Scab Formation

Cold Sore Treatment Advice

Your burst blister will dry out forming a yellow-brown scab.i Although this is unsightly, its a sign that your cold sore has begun healing.

As the scab shrinks, it may create painful cracks in your lip that bleed. The area may itch, burn, or feel tight. To ease discomfort, try a cream or balm containing protectants, such as allantoin, petrolatum, cocoa butter or glycerin.iii

Its a good idea to wear a sunscreen of at least SPF30 when outside. Sunscreen protects your lips while the cold sore heals and may help prevent future breakouts as UV light is a cold sore trigger for many people.ii

Is There A Way To Prevent Getting Herpes

You can protect yourself and your partner by taking steps to prevent an outbreak of herpes. Some things that you can do include:

-If you already have herpes, dont have sex until the outbreak is completely gone, even with a condom.

-Try to learn the signs of an impending outbreak, such as itching, tingling and burning, and stop having sex as soon as you notice.

-If you wear contact lenses, dont wet your lenses with your saliva. This could spread your herpes infection to your eyes.

-Dont have sex with your partner until your herpes sores are completely healed.

-Always tell your partner if you are infected with the herpes virus before you have sex. Even though it can be embarrassing and difficult, herpes is very common, and telling your partner will help keep the infection from spreading.

While there is no cure for genital herpes, with proper treatment you may control the severity and duration of an outbreak. Along with medication prescribed by your physician, certain foods may be able to help prevent a genital herpes outbreak.

Lysine-Rich Foods

A diet with foods rich in lysine may help reduce reoccurring outbreaks associated with genital herpes and cold sores. The university continues by stating those who consumed the recommended 1 to 3 grams of lysine per day experienced a reduction in outbreak duration and severity. Consume foods such as eggs, potatoes, chicken and fish to increase your lysine consumption. You may also consume lysine supplements. The University of Maryland Medical Center, however states those with heart disease and high cholesterol should avoid consuming lysine as initial studies showcased this compound increased triglyceride and cholesterol levels within animals.

Antioxidant-Rich Foods

Antioxidant-rich foods significantly decreased herpes sore outbreak duration, severity and lesion development. The Cleveland Clinic as well as the Mayo Clinic suggests consuming foods such as citrus fruits, whole grains, sweet potatoes, green vegetables, garlic and vegetable oils to increase your bodys antioxidant count.

Stage : Blister Breakout

Within 48 hours, a cold sore blister may appear around your mouth or lips, though you can get them anywhere on your face, including around your nose. A cold sore results in a swollen lip as the blister develops.

The blister may look like a group of small, fluid-filled bumps surrounded by red, swollen skin. The bumps may grow and multiply and can be painful, too.i

You can soothe pain and discomfort with over-the-counter painkiller medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Alternatively, local anesthetic creams such as lidocaine or benzocaine temporarily block nerve signals in your skin, numbing pain and stopping itching. Never squeeze the blisters as this can help spread the virus and even lead to scarring.iv

Use a disposable applicator such as a cotton swab to apply Abreva® Cream, sunscreen, lip balm, or make-up to your cold sore or the surrounding area.
