Why Genital Herpes Comes Back

Genital herpes is caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Once you have the virus, it stays in your body.

It will not spread in your body to cause blisters elsewhere. It stays in a nearby nerve and causes blisters in the same area.

If you can, avoid things that trigger your symptoms.

Triggers can include:

  • surgery on your genital area
  • a weakened immune system for example, from having chemotherapy for cancer

Herpes is caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Once the virus enters ones body, it will always remain there by hiding in the nerve roots. When ones immunity is lowered, it will result in outbreak. Sores usually take about 1-2 weeks to heal, but there are some things that you can do to speed the healing process. Things like allowing your sores to be exposed to air, talking to your doctor about medications, and using ointments may help speed healing time. There are also some things that you can do to reduce and prevent outbreaks, such as reducing prolonged exposure to sunlight, reducing friction during sex, and managing stress.

How Are The Hsv Infections Diagnosed

The appearance of HSV is often so typical that no further testing is necessary to confirm an HSV infection. However, if the diagnosis is uncertain, as it may be in the genital or cervical areas, a swab from the infected skin may be taken and sent to the laboratory for analysis. Other laboratory tests available for diagnosis include specially treated scrapings that are examined under the microscope, and blood tests for antibodies. Some tests are only valid in the early stages, and more than one of these tests may be required to confirm the presence of herpes. Genital herpes can be mistaken for other diseases, including syphilis. A small number of women with genital herpes dont know they have it because it occurs on the cervix which is not sensitive to pain.

How Do Doctors Manage Genital Herpes During Pregnancy

Oral antiviral medications as described above may be used during pregnancy. One serious concern with genital herpes in pregnancy is transmission of the infection to the baby during delivery. In an infant, genital herpes infection can spread through the bloodstream and have serious consequences. Cesarean delivery is performed for women who go into labor while there is an active outbreak of genital herpes in order to prevent infection of the baby during birth.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women with recurrent genital herpes be offered oral antiviral medication at or beyond 36 weeks until delivery in order to increase the chances of being able to deliver vaginally.

How Do Dermatologists Diagnose Herpes Simplex

During an outbreak, your dermatologist often can diagnose herpes simplex by looking at the sores. To confirm the diagnosis, the dermatologist may take a swab from a visible sore and send this swab to a laboratory. Other medical tests, such as a blood test, can detect the herpes simplex virus when sores are not present.

What Are Recurrences Of Herpes And How Likely Are They

Recurrences are repeat symptoms which appear at or close to the place where the infection was first noticed. These are often fairly minor and may be no more than a small spot that heals in a few days. They may be accompanied by sensations itches or nerve twinges. They are unlikely to be as severe as first symptoms and may be almost unnoticed.

Symptoms Of Genital Herpes In Females

Getting a menstrual period can cause an outbreak of genital herpes.

Also, a person may mistake the symptoms of genital herpes for those of a yeast infection or bladder infection.

Genital herpes can spread in the following ways:

  • receiving oral sex from a partner with a cold sore
  • touching a herpes sore, then touching the genitals
  • a baby can contract genital herpes during birth if the mother has the virus

People can sexually transmit the virus even if they have no visible symptoms.

It is not possible to contract genital herpes from toilet seats, bedding, swimming pools, or touching other objects. The virus can only spread from human-to-human contact.

Treatment Of Primary Infection

Antiviral therapy is recommended for an initial genital herpes outbreak, especially if the patient has systemic symptoms or is immunocompromised.2 Oral acyclovir is effective in reducing symptoms1 . Intravenous administration may be required in immunocompromised patients and those with severe disseminated infection.1 Topical acyclovir reduces the duration of viral shedding and the length of time before all lesions become crusted, but this treatment is much less effective than oral or intravenous acyclovir.1

Infection due to the herpes simplex virus is very contagious. It spreads through direct contact with the sores of an infected person. Among different variants, two strains of the herpes virus are most commonly known to cause infection such as HSV type 1 and HSV type 2.

The infection caused by HSV type 1 involves the areas like mouth, lips, nose, and face. On the other hand, HSV type 2 causes an infection that involves the genitals, buttocks, and lower back. Herpes infection of the buttocks and lower back is referred to as sacral herpes simplex or genital herpes. It appears in the form of red blisters on the buttocks.

Herpes On The Buttocks

One of the many health complications that can be triggered by an infection known as herpes simplex virus is herpes on the buttocks. While this infection isnt popularly known, it involves a viral condition on either of the two rounded parts of the exterior anatomy of most mammals or what is called part of the back of the hip. These rounded portions are located on the rear part of the pelvic area.

It is very likely for someone to have herpes on his/her buttocks, most especially if the person is diagnosed with genital herpes. As already described, there are two types of HSV. The second type of infection is considered genital herpes, which in return, can cause herpes on the buttocks.

There is no clear evidence if HSV-1 can also trigger the same condition. There are some cases associated with HSV-1, but its mostly rare. Outbreaks can happen if, in any case, someone has unintentionally spread the virus through sexual contact.

Herpes is a lifetime infection. It means that even if the infection or illness has been treated, it can still remain in the body. After a series of treatments and medical care, the virus becomes inactive but continues to exist within the body. If the body isnt well taken care of, the virus can reactivate and cause a number of outbreaks.

What You Need to Know About Genital Herpes

Genital herpes might show minimal signs or form small blisters which break open and lead to small ulcers. They normally go away in 2 weeks to 1 month. Shooting or tingling pains might appear before these blisters happen.

Herpes might cycle between periods of active illness that is followed by menstruations with no signs.

The first herpes episode is frequently more serious and might be associated with headaches, fever, swollen lymph nodes as well as pains in the muscles. In time, most episodes of active illness reduce in severity or frequency.

How Do I Prevent Spreading The Virus

An infected person can take precautions to prevent spreading the virus.

If you have oral herpes:

  • When sores are present on the face, avoid kissing, oral contact, and sharing items such as eating utensils, towels,

and lip balms.

  • If tingling, burning, itching, or tenderness develops in an area of your body where you have had a herpes sore, do

not touch it and do not touch others with it.

If you have genital herpes:

  • When you have sores or symptoms, avoid sexual
  • At other times, condoms can reduce the risk of spreading the virus. It is important to know that while a condom can help, it is possible to spread the virus if it lies on nearby skin that a condom does not cover. For persons who suffer frequent outbreaks of herpes, taking an antiviral drug daily prevents most outbreaks and reduces transmission of the virus to others.

How Is Genital Herpes Treated

There is no cure for the herpes simplex virus. The blisters usually heal and go by themselves, so you may not always need treatment. There is antiviral medicines for herpes, which can: shorten outbreaks, relieve discomfort and stop symptoms from getting worse.

The antiviral treatment is most effective when you take it within the first five days of symptoms appearing. Avoid touching the blisters as this can also increase the risk of spreading the infection. If your herpes treatment requires you to apply cream to a sore, just gently pat the cream on, being careful not to rub around the surrounding area.

You can ease your symptoms by:

  • keeping the affected area clean using plain or salt water to prevent blisters or ulcers from becoming infected
  • applying petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, to any blisters or ulcers to reduce the pain when passing urine
  • asking a healthcare provider to recommend painkilling creams
  • avoiding tight clothing because it may irritate the blisters and ulcers.

Dont have sex until you or your partner have finished your treatment, and the blisters or ulcers have gone. If its your first outbreak, its sometimes advised that you check back with a healthcare provider before having sex again, to ensure that your symptoms have gone.

The Emotional Side Of Herpes

Many people feel embarrassed and ashamed upon learning that they have genital herpes, or theyre worried about getting it from a sexual partner or prospective sexual partner.

If either case describes you, take the time to educate yourself about the causes and symptoms of herpes, treatments, and steps you can take to stop the spread of herpes, such as using condoms.

Herpes Symptoms And Signs

Herpes zoster on lower abdomen and buttocks

In order to diagnose herpes, a health care provider can swab an area of visibly active herpes infection or, if symptoms arent active, a blood test can be given that measures the number of herpes antibodies present in the body. The antibodies dont indicate herpes itself, but rather show the immune systems response to the presence of the virus in the body. Its important to note that sometimes a swab can give false negative results since herpes lesions need to be large enough to yield enough detectable virus and if the outbreak is already healing it also may not be detected in a swab.

The most common herpes symptoms include:

  • Developing either a single cold sore or cluster of multiple cold sores that form on the lips, inside the mouth, or on the genitals, buttocks and upper thighs.
  • Sores can sometimes be severe, painful and rupture and cause fluid to be secreted out.
  • Some herpes canker sores develop a thin, white coating and burn when touched while they healing.
  • Around herpes cold sores, its common to feel pain, tenderness and other symptoms of a rash, such as redness or signs of swelling.
  • Some people are able to tell before an outbreak if one is going to occur because they feel tingling, itchy sensations near the affected area.
  • Some people develop other symptoms during herpes outbreaks that are similar to those caused by a cold or the flu. This may include fatigue, irritability, aches or a slight fever.

Where Does The Herpes Virus Live In The Body

The herpes simplex viruses are latent, meaning they can live in the body without causing symptoms. After the initial infection, the virus gets into the nerve roots and spreads to the sensory nerve ganglia, the junctions where nerves from different parts of the body come together. For the genital area, the ganglia are adjacent to the spinal cord in the lower back. For orofacial herpes , the ganglia are located behind the cheek bone.
