Igm And Igg Herpes Test

How Will A Partner React

Discontinuation of Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) IgM Testing

Some may overreact. Some wont bat an eye. Since many people have genital herpes or have heard about it, many people wont be shocked or surprised. From the stories that weve heard at the Herpes Resource Center, most people will react well, and will appreciate your honesty and respect for the relationship and their wellbeing. While a negative reaction is possible, this doesnt necessarily mean a bad ending. If that person values you as an individual and is interested in a relationship, something as minor as herpes shouldnt stand in the way. If it does, then that person obviously wasnt a good fit in the first place.

Whatever happens, try to be flexible. Give your partner time to respond, think about what youve said and absorb the information. Remember when you first found out? It took you time to adjust, too.

You dont have to be overly concerned about protecting a partners feelings. And, you may want to reconsider a relationship where you have to do all the emotional work. A safer sex discussion might help you find out if this partner is a good candidate for your love and attention.

A few people are going to react negatively. It wont matter what you say or how you say it. Remember, these people are the exception not the rule. If a partner decides not to pursue a relationship with you because you have herpes, it is best to know this now. There are many people who will be attracted to you for who you arewith or without herpes.

What Is A Serum Herpes Simplex Antibodies Test

A serum herpes simplex antibodies test is a blood test that checks for the presence of antibodies to the herpes simplex virus .

HSV is a common infection that causes herpes. Herpes can appear in various parts of the body, but it most commonly affects the genitals or mouth. The two types of herpes infections are HSV-1 and HSV-2.

HSV-1, commonly known as oral herpes, usually causes cold sores and blisters near the mouth and on the face.

Its transmitted through kissing or sharing drinking glasses and utensils with a person who has an HSV infection.

HSV-2 is typically responsible for causing genital herpes. Its generally transmitted through sexual contact.

HSV-1 and HSV-2 dont always cause symptoms, and people may not know they have the infection.

The serum herpes simplex antibodies test doesnt actually check for the HSV infection itself. However, it can determine whether someone has antibodies to the virus.

Antibodies are special proteins that the body uses to defend itself against invading organisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

This means that most people who have an HSV infection will have the corresponding antibodies.

The test can detect antibodies for both types of HSV infections.

Your doctor may order a serum herpes simplex antibodies test if they suspect you have an HSV infection.

The results will determine whether youve contracted an HSV infection. If you have the antibodies to HSV, youll test positive even if you dont currently show any symptoms.

Is Alzheimers Disease Related To Hsv

Alzheimers disease is a progressive brain disease that develops as a result of a complex series of events occurring in the brain over a long period of time. The causes of Alzheimers disease may include genetic, environmental, and other factors. Several different factors have been statistically linked to Alzheimers disease, including HSV-1 infection. However, some investigations suggest that viruses other than HSV-1 may influence Alzheimers disease. More research is needed to determine whether or not there is a causal link between HSV-1 infection and Alzheimers disease.

What Is The Purpose Of A Herpes Igm Test

Herpes IgG / IgM Rapid Test Kit

The herpes IgM test is a simple blood test and results are usually available within a week.

Keep in mind that:

  • This test may be done to confirm that a person has herpes after they’ve had a recent outbreak.
  • Herpes IgM is one of the first types of antibody that appears after infection, so this blood test is the earliest one that can be used to detect herpes.
  • The herpes IgM antibodies can take up to 10 days to develop after a primary infection with the virus.

If you believe you have been exposed but have no symptoms, you should wait at least two weeks before getting tested. You may want to wait even longer depending on which tests are available in your area.

What Do My Test Results Mean

There are two possible antibodies that your body can make to HSV-1 and HSV-2. These are IgM and IgG.

IgM is the antibody that is made first and typically represents a current or acute infection, although this may not always be the case.

IgG is made after the IgM antibody and typically will be present in the bloodstream for the rest of your life.

A negative test result is considered normal. This generally means that youve never contracted an HSV infection.

However, its possible for your results to come back negative even if youve contracted the infection within the past few months. This is referred to as a false negative.

Your body will typically take several weeks to develop IgG antibodies to HSV.

If youre tested earlier in your infection, its possible to have a false negative result. Your doctor may recommend that you return in 2 to 3 weeks to be retested.

A positive test result for HSV-1 or HSV-2 indicates that youve contracted either virus at some point.

The results also allow your doctor to differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2, which isnt always possible by visually examining the sores.

Depending on your results, you and your doctor can discuss ways to treat and prevent the transmission of your HSV infection.

When a serum antibody test is recommended for HSV, IgG detection is preferred. In fact, some laboratories are discontinuing their IgM tests in the future.

Finding Out The Hard Way

No good data exist on how often patients with questionable positive results are actually re-tested. Until the 2015 update, CDC herpes testing guidelines had no mention of confirmatory testing for low-positive results, said Johnston. So patients often discovered the option not through their doctors, but through searching the web and reading online herpes forums.

That was the experience of Bryan, a 40-year-old man who lives in Indiana, who wrongly believed he had herpes for about two months in 2011. The misunderstanding actually put him at higher risk, he said: During those months he considered joining the hundreds of thousands of Americans on dating sites for herpes-positive people. Exclusively dating people with herpes would have increased his likelihood of contracting the virus.

The experience of YT, a 33-year-old mom who has suffered from frequent herpes symptoms over the last year, shows another side of the testing breakdown. She believes she was given HSV by a partner who didnt realize herpes wasnt included in his previous STD tests, she told STAT. Having herpes has caused her significant emotional trauma, and has driven her to permanently swear off dating. Had her partner known his true status, she wonders if her story would have been different.

People call and say, I just dont know whats going on, he said. Weve almost become de facto counselors.

Cost And Health Insurance

Depending on where you live and the lab you use, your HSV IgG blood test can cost between $35 and $80. Public clinics tend to be cheaper.

Genital HSV is considered an STI. But don’t assume that a free STI clinic will have the test or provide it free of charge. Some may only offer free testing for:

Is It A New Or Recurrent Infection

Immunoglobulin (IgG and IgM) interpretation of serological tests

Herpes IgM levels tend to go up early in an infection, and levels often go down with time. This means a positive herpes IgM result is most often associated with a new infection. However, individuals with recurrent herpes infections may also have positive herpes IgM blood results.

Individuals may not have a positive immunoglobulin G test, an antibody test that detects IgG, until they’ve been infected for at least several months. However, IgG levels tend to remain high throughout the course of an infection, while IgM levels are more variable.

This means that if an individual has positive results on both IgG and IgM tests, they may be having a recurrent herpes episode, instead of a new infection. A positive IgM test alone is more likely to be a new infection.

What Happens During A Herpes Antibody Test

There are different tests for HSV. Doctors will choose a test based on a persons health history and symptoms. Options include the following:

  • Swab test: A healthcare professional uses a swab to take a sample of fluid and cells from a herpes sore. They then order a PCR test or viral culture to determine whether HSV is present. This is the most reliable way to test for HSV. Doctors normally do this as standard procedure before ordering any other sort of test.
  • Blood test: A healthcare professional uses a needle to take a small amount of blood from a vein in a persons arm.
  • Lumbar puncture: Doctors may use this method if they suspect a person has an infection in the brain or spinal cord. It involves numbing the skin of the lower spine and inserting a thin, hollow needle between two vertebrae to collect cerebrospinal fluid.

A doctor will send samples to a laboratory for testing and a person should get their results within a few days.

Treatment For Oral Herpes

Herpes Simplex Virus Hsv Igg/igm Rapid Test Herpes Test Kit

The antiviral medications available in pill form have been specifically developed for the treatment of genital herpes. However, it is not uncommon for healthcare providers to prescribe the antiviral drugs to those who have frequent or severe outbreaks of oral herpes.

A recent study found valacyclovir to be effective for treating oral herpes in a one-day treatment of 2 grams taken at the first sign of a cold sore, and then again about 12 hours later.

There are two topical antiviral medications prescribed for the treatment of oral HSV symptoms: acyclovir ointment and penciclovir cream. Both work to speed up the healing process and reduce the viral activity. These topical drugs are put directly on the lesions themselves, but can also be used at the onset of prodrome.

Other topical treatments for oral herpes are available over-the-counter , but are not antiviral compounds like acyclovir and penciclovir. Some also contain ingredients that numb the area and induce temporary relief from the discomfort of an outbreak. Unfortunately, some OTC treatments may actually delay the healing time of symptoms because they can further irritate the area with repeated applications. There is only one OTC FDA-approved cream, called Abreva®, which has been clinically proven to help speed the healing process.

The Most Accurate Herpes Tests

If youve noticed a lesion or sore around your genitals, this is the best time to get a herpes test.

Thats because a healthcare provider can take a sample directly from the affected area and look directly for the virus rather than the antibodies.

The most common test is a culture test. It needs to be taken as soon as you notice a lesion.

If you wait too long and the lesion begins to heal, there may not be enough viruses for the culture to detect, and you might get a false negative.

If you get a positive result from a culture test, the chances of it being a false positive are very low. You most likely have herpes.

The culture can be analyzed to determine whether the viruses is HSV-1 or HSV-2.

Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing or NAAT is the more modern option. Its fast and accurate. The test looks for the viruss DNA.

What If A Partner Has Herpes

In a new relationship there is always risk. Usually this risk is emotional. When a partner has herpes, there is additional risk that you could get it, too. You may have concerns about risking infection for a relationship that may not last. Youll want to understand how to lower the risk for infection and ways to talk with your partner. Remember, if you have been sexually active you may already have been at risk for herpes.

You may have it and not know it. Because herpes can be spread without symptoms it can be hard to know when a person became infected and who infected them. In fact, if you and your partner have had sex, its possible your partner got herpes from you.

In an intimate, sexual relationship with a person who has herpes, the risk of contracting the infection will never be zero. Some couples have sexual relationships for years without transmitting herpes just by avoiding sexual contact during outbreaks, using condoms regularly and using suppressive antiviral therapy to reduce outbreaks.

Genital Herpes Is Common Shouldnt Cdc Recommend Testing For Everyone

CDC recommends herpes testing for people who have genital symptoms to confirm if they have it. Testing allows a healthcare provider to talk with patients about what to expect in the future. This includes talking about medications that help with symptoms. Providers can also tell patients how to lower the risk of transmitting herpes to sex partner.

CDC does not recommend herpes testing for people without symptoms in most situations. This is because of the limits of a herpes blood test and the possibility of a wrong test result. The chances of wrong test results are higher for people who are at low risk of infection.

Blood tests might be useful if:

  • You have genital symptoms that could be related to herpes, or
  • You have a sex partner with genital herpes, or
  • Your provider found signs of herpes, but you still need a test to confirm it.

If you are sexually active, talk openly and honestly with your healthcare provider about what tests are right for you. These tips can help.
