Unlike in the general population, where clinical manifestations of infection generally range from asymptomatic carriage to mild to moderate symptoms, BMT recipients may develop much more severe disease. Identifying patients at risk for reactivation of latent viruses or acquisition of new ones is important, as active infection and diseases can potentially be prevented with pre-emptive monitoring or tailored prophylaxis during the most critical periods.
