Can You Get Hiv From Herpes 2

Should You Be Tested For The Herpes Virus

Understanding Genital Herpes

The CDC does not recommend herpes testing for people who have no symptoms. They point out that diagnosing genital herpes in someone lacking any symptoms does not lead to them making changes in their sexual choices. They are no more likely to use condoms or to refrain from having sex than if they hadnt been tested.

Also, false-positive test results can happen. A false positive is a test result saying you have herpes when actually you do not.

Even if you have no symptoms of herpes or of any other sexually transmitted disease, though, you should talk frankly with your doctor or another healthcare provider about your sexual activities to see if you should be screened for STDs, including herpes.

There are some situations where herpes blood tests can be useful, says the CDC:

  • If you have genital symptoms that could be related to herpes
  • If you now have, or have had, a sex partner with genital herpes
  • If you want a complete STD exam, especially if you have multiple sex partners

How Its Passed On

Herpes is passed on through:

  • sharing sex toys.

It can also be passed from a mother to a baby.

Infection is more likely when blisters are on the skin but it sometimes happens when no blisters are present especially before or straight after an outbreak.

Chances Of Getting An Std From One Unprotected Encounter

Its understandable to wonder about the odds of getting an STD, including from a one night stand or other unprotected encounter. You might wonder whether its really such a big deal to have unprotected sexual contact. Of course, this is probably more of a concern for you if you recently had an unprotected encounter and are now unsure of whether you could have been exposed to an STD. Even if the person you were with didnt say anything about having an STD, its reasonable to wonder about the odds of catching an STD from that one encounter you had.

While it wont necessarily happen, it only takes one time coming in contact with an infected person to acquire a sexually transmitted disease. STDs can be spread from person to person through body fluids and/or skin contact, depending on the type. Because of this, the odds of catching an STD are high from just one time. You only need to come in contact with that infection to get it. The risk goes up from unprotected sex with multiple partners, but its still there from one partner and one encounter.

Even from having unprotected sexual intercourse one time, you have about a 30 percent chance of getting gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis from someone whos infected. So you can see that the chances of STD from one encounter are not 100 percent but that there are pretty good odds of getting one from just one time without protection.

You’re More Likely To Get Hiv If Your Partner Has Hiv And An Std

People with both HIV and an STD have more HIV in their semen or vaginal fluid. This makes it easier for a person with an STD or HIV to give the virus to others when having sex without a condom.

Remember, many people who have HIV don’t know it. It can take many years for symptoms to show up. That is why it is so important to use condoms during sex, or not to have sex at all.

Herpes Increases Risk Of Getting Hiv

Herpes Simplex

Dear Alice,

If you have the herpes virus are you more susceptable to AIDS?

Dear Reader,

In a word, possibly. Many studies show that the risk of contracting HIV does increase for people who have genital herpes in fact, it’s estimated that having herpes makes a person two to four times more susceptible to HIV infection, IF that person is exposed to HIV.

People who have both herpes and HIV infections are also more likely to transmit HIV to their partners. Replication or activity of the herpes virus in the body appears to increase HIV viral loads . In addition, because of HIVs compromising effects on the immune system, it can cause more severe or longer-lasting herpes outbreaks. This can lead to increased transmission of HIV because transmission is more likely during herpes outbreaks. Treating both herpes and HIV may reduce the risk of transmission of both infections.

To help prevent HIV transmission, sexually active people have a few options to consider:

  • Abstaining from sex during herpes outbreaks ,
  • Getting tested regularly for HIV and other STIs, and encouraging partner to also get tested and treated if necessary,
  • Limiting the number of sex partners and talking with partners about any past or current infections.

Treating herpes and/or HIV may help reduce the possibility of transmitting either virus to another person, and can also help a person with either type of infection stay healthy.

What Causes Herpes Simplex

Herpes simplex virus enters the body through the skin. After the initial infection and symptom onset, the virus will have periods of inactivity.

However, the virus doesn’t go away. It stays dormant in the body’s nerve cells. During this time, you likely won’t experience symptoms. Periodically, it can be reactivated and cause additional outbreaks.

I Had Lesions When I Was Evaluated But My Culture Was Negative Does This Mean That I Dont Have Herpes

Not necessarily. Although lesions can be caused by something other than herpes, false negative herpes tests can occur if the samples are not taken appropriately, if there is a long transport time between the clinic and the laboratory, or if cultures were taken late in the course of the lesions. Lesions that occur early in the course of a herpes outbreak are much more likely to have positive cultures than cultures taken after the lesions crust over.

What Is Neonatal Herpes

Neonatal herpes can be a very serious infection. Babies generally contract the virus from their birthing parent during childbirth even if the parent doesnt have active lesions. They may also get HSV-1 if an adult with an active cold sore kisses them. Breastfeeding babies can also get HSV-1 from the breast if there are lesions present. But babies cant get herpes from breast milk, so its safe to pump and feed.

Herpes simplex can be more dangerous for young babies because they dont have a fully developed immune system. But most babies with neonatal herpes can recover fully with treatment.

The dangers of neonatal herpes are much higher if the infection spreads to the babys organs. If youre pregnant and have herpes, speak with your healthcare provider about how to lower the risk of passing the infection to your baby.

How Can I Prevent Genital Herpes

If you are sexually active, you can do the following things to lower your chances of getting genital herpes:

  • Being in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who does not have herpes.
  • Using condoms the right way every time you have sex.

Be aware that not all herpes sores occur in areas that a condom can cover. Also, the skin can release the virus from areas that do not have a visible herpes sore. For these reasons, condoms may not fully protect you from getting herpes.

If your sex partner has/have genital herpes, you can lower your risk of getting it if:

  • Your partner takes an anti-herpes medicine every day. This is something your partner should discuss with his or her healthcare provider.

Where Does The Herpes Virus Live In The Body

The herpes simplex viruses are latent, meaning they can live in the body without causing symptoms. After the initial infection, the virus gets into the nerve roots and spreads to the sensory nerve ganglia, the junctions where nerves from different parts of the body come together. For the genital area, the ganglia are adjacent to the spinal cord in the lower back. For orofacial herpes , the ganglia are located behind the cheek bone.

Why Genital Herpes Boosts The Risk Of Hiv Infection

Scientists have discovered why people who develop genital herpes sores are at higher risk of contracting HIV despite successful treatment of the lesions. The new insight may lead to better strategies for HIV prevention.

Genital herpes, caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2 , is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. It is also associated with a 2- to 3-fold increased risk for HIV infection. Some people infected with HSV-2 suffer from recurring sores and breaks in genital skin. Researchers hypothesized that these lesions account for the higher risk for HIV. However, recent clinical trials that successfully treated genital herpes lesions with the anti-viral drug acyclovir didn’t reduce the risk of HIV infection.

A team led by Dr. Lawrence Corey and Dr. Jia Zhu of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Dr. Anna Wald of the University of Washington sought to understand why genital herpes boosts the risk of HIV infection even after treatment with oral acyclovir and the healing of genital lesions. Their work was funded by NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development .

In further experiments, the scientists found that HIV replicates 3 to 5 times as quickly in cultured tissue from the sites of healed HSV-2 lesions as in cultured tissue from control sites.

What Is Herpes Simplex

Herpes Spreads, Even Without Symptoms

Herpes simplex is a virus that causes skin infections. The infection lasts your lifetime, and it causes painful or itchy sores and blisters that come and go. Herpes simplex virus typically doesnt cause severe problems. But it can be dangerous in infants and people with weakened immune systems. There are two types of herpes simplex:

  • Herpes simplex 1 tends to affect your mouth or face. It causes cold sores. HSV-1 spreads through contact with saliva .
  • Herpes simplex 2 is a sexually transmitted disease . It causes sores on skin that comes in contact with the genitals of an infected person.

Sometimes a herpes infection can affect other parts of your body, such as your eyes or other parts of your skin.

Herpes & Hiv: Not What You Think

It is always a shock to find out that what you had assumed was true simply is not. That is why clinical trials are so important to science. The unexpected results of a recent trial examining herpes and HIV demonstrates the importance of carrying out controlled trials to test preconceived beliefs.

Up to 90% of women with HIV infection in southern Africa also have genital herpes . Most people who are infected with HSV-2 do not know that they have the virus, which causes symptomatic genital sores and breaks in the skin but is frequently active without symptoms. Multiple studies had shown that infection with herpes was associated with an increased risk for HIV infection. However, whether treatment to suppress HSV-2 would decrease HIV transmission had not been tested.

The Partners in Prevention HSV/HIV Transmission Study, led by the University of Washington and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, looked at whether the use of acyclovir, a drug widely used for the safe and effective suppression of HSV-2, by persons who are infected with both HSV-2 and HIV could reduce the likelihood that they would transmit HIV to their HIV-uninfected partners.

Will Treating Someone For Stds Prevent Them From Getting Hiv

No. Its not enough. Screening for STDs can help assess a persons risk for getting HIV. Treatment of STDs is important to prevent the complications of those infections, and to prevent transmission to partners, but it should not be expected to prevent spread of HIV.

If someone is HIV-positive and is diagnosed with an STD, they should receive counseling about risk reduction and how to protect their sex partner from getting re-infected with the same STD or getting HIV.

Is There A Cure For Herpes Simplex

There is no cure for herpes simplex. Once you have the virus, its a lifelong infection.

What is the outlook for people with herpes simplex?

For many people, the first herpes outbreak is the most severe. Many outbreaks are less frequent and milder after the first year of infection. Some people may have only one outbreak and never have another again.

Herpes infection doesnt usually pose a serious health risk. The risk of a health complication due to herpes is higher in infants and if you have HIV/AIDS, cancer or an organ transplant.
