Treatment For Genital Herpes
Three drugs are approved to treat genital herpes:
These medications are antiviral drugs called nucleoside analogues. The drugs are used initially to treat a first attack of herpes, and then afterward to either treat recurrent outbreaks or reduce frequency of recurrences .
No drug can cure herpes simplex virus. The infection may recur after treatment has been stopped. Even during therapy, an infected person can still transmit the virus to another person. Drugs can, however, reduce the severity of symptoms, improve healing times, and prevent recurrences.
Antiviral drugs for genital herpes are generally given as pills that are taken by mouth. If people experience very severe disease or complications, they need to be hospitalized and receive an antiviral drug intravenously. Acyclovir is also available as an ointment, which can be used as an adjunct for treatment of initial genital herpes.

Of the 34 survivors, two patients could not be traced, one patient declined assessment, and two patients were unable to travel to Auckland. The 34 surviving patients were 13 months to 92 years old and were evaluated six months to 11 years after herpes simplex encephalitis. Eight patients were assessed in the first year.
Grades on the Glasgow outcome scale were grade 1 in five patients , grade 2 in one patient , grade 3 in seven patients , grade 4 in nine patients , and grade 5 in 20 patients . Of the seven severely disabled patients, two had died after the first month two were living at home, but had a profound impairment of anterograde memory and required constant supervision one was severely confused, incontinent, dysphasic, and living in a private hospital and two children had pronounced developmental delay and poorly controlled epilepsy. Of the nine moderately disabled patients, five were unemployed, two were working but had been unable to return to their original occupation, and two patients were still at school but had serious learning difficulties. How Is Herpes Meningoencephalitis Treated
Treating the cause of your infection is the primary treatment. Since most cases of meningoencephalitis are caused by the herpes virus, the antiviral acyclovir is used to treat it. You may need to take this medicine through an intravenous line for 10 to 14 days. Your healthcare provider may also give you medicine to reduce swelling in the brain and to treat or prevent seizures.
Healthcare providers may treat babies with this disease with acyclovir for several weeks.
Depending on the severity of your infection, you may need to be treated in the hospital.
Management Of Sex Partners
The sex partners of persons who have symptomatic genital herpes can benefit from evaluation and counseling. Remember that herpes transmission can occur when symptoms are present , but may also occur even if there are no genital symptoms through asymptomatic viral shedding.
For people who have frequent episodes of genital herpes, antiviral medication, taken daily, helps to reduce transmission of herpes to a sexual partner.

The attorney for the family of Jerome Kunkel, 18, told NBC News that the Kentucky health department had overreacted with an order for unvaccinated students to stay away from school during a chickenpox outbreak in March.
The Kunkel family says they don’t regret the teen catching the virus because he’s now immune.
Its pretty funny, they make a mountain out of a molehill,” Christopher Wiest, the Kunkel family attorney, said. “Jerome got it and was a little bit itchy and went back to school.”
