Why Is There No Cure For Herpes Yet

Why Isn’t There A Cure For This Yet

Why Herpes Is the Most Talented Virus Ever
Skye001

First of all i would like to wish everyone “Happy New Year”.

I have hsv 2 since dec 2014, i have accepted it but i do have those days that i just get extremely depressed.

I don’t understand why there isn’t a cure for this yet?! There is even a cure for syphilis in its early stage!

Its so unfairrrrr, when u do a check up they dont even test for herpes! When u get diagnosed with it they tell you its not a big deal but still there isnt a cure for this or is it part of the std tests.

Right now i am just driving myself crazy because i finally met someone i really like but i dont know if things will work out between us. I just dont want to tell and if things dont work out that i will be known as the girl with a disease.

Its all been stressfull lately

Do Condoms Help Prevent The Spread Of Genital Herpes

Yes. To prevent transmission of herpes, we recommend that condoms be used 100% of the time. Many patients will shed the virus and be contagious when they dont have symptoms. Studies have shown that asymptomatic shedding occurs between 1% and 3% of the time in patients with HSV II genital infections. Many new herpes infections occur from partners who are shedding the virus asymptomatically, so condoms are highly recommended.

Condoms may not be an attractive option for monogamous couples or for couples who desire to become pregnant. Couples may opt to have serological tests to determine if either partner has an asymptomatic infection. In close monogamous relationships, the risks of transmission can be weighed against other relationship issues, such as intimacy and pregnancy.

Is Genital Herpes Related To Shingles

Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is caused by the varicella zoster virus , which causes chickenpox earlier in life. The natural history of varicella zoster infection is similar to genital herpes infection in that VZV also becomes latent in the sensory nerve roots. Later in life the virus may exit, causing shingles.

Recurrences in shingles cause blister lesions in a single area of skin called a dermatome. Shingles is not a sexually transmitted infection and is independent from genital herpes.

Billions Worldwide Living With Herpes

About half a billion people worldwide are living with genital herpes, and several billion have an oral herpes infection, new estimates show, highlighting the need to improve awareness and scale up services to prevent and treat herpes.

About 13% of the worlds population aged 15 to 49 years were living with herpes simplex virus type 2 infection in 2016, the latest year for which data is available. HSV-2 is almost exclusively sexually transmitted, causing genital herpes. Infection can lead to recurring, often painful, genital sores in up to a third of people infected.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 is mainly transmitted by oral to oral contact to cause oral herpes infection sometimes leading to painful sores in or around the mouth . However, HSV-1 can also be transmitted to the genital area through oral sex, causing genital herpes.

Around 67% of the worlds population aged 0 to 49 had HSV-1 infection in 2016 an estimated 3.7 billion people. Most of these infections were oral however, between 122 million to 192 million people were estimated to have genital HSV-1infection.

Genital herpes is a substantial health concern worldwide beyond the potential pain and discomfort suffered by people living with the infection, the associated social consequences can have a profound effect on sexual and reproductivehealth says Dr Ian Askew, Director of the Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization .

Is There A Vaccine For Herpes

Yet No Herpes Cure

As we mentioned previously, most people who contract the herpes infection may not experience any symptoms, which means the virus can at times go undetected in the body and the immune system might not react to it right away. This makes it difficult for scientist and medical researchers to make an effective herpes vaccine. Whenever a vaccine is developed, it mainly is created to target the part of your immune system that reacts to a virus or bacteria . The vaccine teaches your body how to kill the virus or bacteria before it affects your body and makes you sick. In the case of HSV, the virus that causes herpes, the immune system in most cases cant recognize the virus which makes it difficult to develop a herpes vaccine.

In the past, there have been some studies for the herpes vaccine and various herpes cure research, which have had good results. But most of these studies had animals as samples for the research and when the same tests were conducted on humans the results were not as promising as they were on the animals.

Currently, there are three anti-virals approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration , for genital herpes: Acyclovir , Valacyclovir , and Famciclovir . But for now, there arent any approved herpes vaccines.

Genital Herpes Is Spread By Skin

The virus can be spread when someone with HSV has an episode or an outbreak characterised by having a sore, blister, ulcer or skin split . It can also be spread between episodes, when there is no sore, blister, ulcer or skin split present called asymptomatic viral shedding.

During viral shedding the virus is on the skin surface and can be spread through genital skin-to-skin contact, or from the mouth or face to genital skin during contact.

Who Might Get Herpes Simplex

People of any age can contract herpes simplex. You are more likely to get the virus if you:

  • Were assigned female at birth.
  • Have had multiple sex partners.
  • Started having sex at a young age.
  • Have a history of any sexually transmitted infection .
  • Have a weakened immune system.
  • Dont use condoms for intercourse and dental dams for oral sex.

Who gets HSV-1, commonly known as oral herpes?

Anyone can get HSV-1. Most people contract HSV-1 during childhood. It spreads when an adult who has the virus has close contact with a child, such as when a family member kisses a child.

Who gets HSV-2, commonly known as genital herpes?

Genital herpes affects sexually active teens and adults of all genders and races. It can spread if you have multiple sexual partners and dont use condoms or dental dams.

People assigned female at birth are more at risk. Delicate vaginal tissue can tear, making it easier for the infection to get in. Black people who were AFAB are especially vulnerable, with an estimated 1 in 2 people AFAB between the ages of 14 and 49 infected with HSV-2.

Symptoms Of Genital Herpes

Many people who have genital herpes may not be aware they have the infection, because they may not have any symptoms.

The first episode of herpes can cause considerable pain and distress. Symptoms of the first episode may include:

  • flu-like symptoms such as feeling unwell, headaches and pains in the back and legs, with or without enlarged glands in the groin
  • small blisters around the genitals these break open to form shallow, painful ulcers, which scab over and heal after one to two weeks
  • small cracks in the skin with or without an itch or tingling
  • redness or a distinct rash
  • some people also have considerable pain and swelling in the genital area, and hence may have additional pain and difficulty passing urine.

Is There A Herpes Cure

Why Do So Many People Have Herpes?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for any strain of the herpes simplex virus.

It is common for the infection to be reactivated at various periods in a persons life brought on by stress, a weakened immune system, surgery, high sun exposure, pregnancy, menstruation, and other conditions.

Antiviral medications have proven effective in managing symptoms from outbreaks.

Is There A Cure For Herpes

Its important to note the difference between a vaccine and a cure. A cure, obviously, would heal a person already carrying the virus. Whereas a vaccine is like installing a harmless set of instructions for the body so it knows how to eliminate the virus in case it comes into contact with the body later. A cure eliminates and a vaccine prevents. Cool, got it, but other than being an STD, what makes herpes so special?

What exactly is herpes?

The thing is, herpes is unlike other viruses that have once been fatally common. The virus is different from, for example, the measles virus because measles will make you sick quite quickly as the immune system reacts to its arrival and then is more prepared for the virus should it appear in the future.

Herpes, on the other hand, doesnt always show symptoms immediately. The virus sometimes never even alerts the body of its presence, other times the symptoms come and go, and still other times, its severe, rapidly creating symptoms after its been acquired.

The span of time that herpes can be asymptomatic can vary from weeks, months, years, or even decades! This lovely characteristic is called virus latency. Oh yeah, and its ability to incorporate its own genetic material into the genetic material of the infected person is also part of the latency characteristic. Nice.

Treatment For Genital Herpes

There is no medication to cure your body of the herpes virus. Treatment is aimed at easing symptoms, reducing the frequency of recurrences and reducing transmission.

Symptoms can be improved by:

  • ice packs to the affected area
  • pain-relieving medication such as paracetamol
  • antiviral medication such as acyclovir, famciclovir and valaciclovir. These can reduce the severity of an episode if taken early enough . Topical antivirals usually used for cold sores on the lips or face are not suitable for use on the genitals.

Genital Herpes And Pregnancy

It is important to avoid contracting herpes during pregnancy. A first episode during pregnancy can create a greater risk of transmission to a newborn.

Fortunately, it is rare for women with genital herpes to infect their babies. If you know that you have genital herpes before becoming pregnant, your physician will monitor your condition throughout your pregnancy. If you have an active outbreak at the time of delivery, a C-section may be recommended. Depending on individual diagnosis, though, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists endorses suppressive therapy to reduce the frequency of C-section.

How Is Herpes Simplex Diagnosed

Is There a Herpes Cure? No, and There May Never Be One

Healthcare providers may diagnose herpes simplex based on how the sores look. Your provider may take a sample from the sore. Laboratory analysis of the sample can confirm or rule out the herpes virus.

If you dont have sores, your healthcare provider can use a blood test to check for HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibody, a marker showing youve been exposed to the virus. The blood test doesnt show an active infection . But it informs your provider whether youve been exposed to the herpes virus in the past. If this is your first infection, you may not test positive for herpes if there hasnt been enough time for your body to develop antibodies. The HSV-1and HSV-2 antibody test may be repeated in eight to 12 weeks.

If You Have Genital Herpes Already Can It Be Spread To Other Parts Of The Body Such As The Arms Or Legs

No. Genital herpes cannot be transmitted to another part of your body such as your arm, leg or hand after the first infection occurs. If you have genital HSV II, you will not get HSV II at another site in your body. The immune system produces antibodies that protect other parts of your body from infection. However, there are cases where a person has multiple site infections from the same virus. This is usually acquired at the time of the first infection. For example, if someone has never had herpes but then has oral and genital sex with an infected partner, they can acquire the infection at both sites.

What Are The Different Types Of Herpes

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV I and HSV II. HSV I commonly causes oral herpes, or cold sores. This virus can show up as an upper respiratory tract infection during early childhood. HSV II is the cause of most cases of genital herpes. However, it is possible for HSV I to cause genital herpes and HSV II to cause oral herpes.

Clinicians cannot tell the difference between the two types by physical examination alone, but there are differences between the two viruses. For example, genital herpes caused by HSV II is much more likely to recur. This diagnosis can be helpful in establishing a health care plan.

A Cure For Herpes There Is Progress To Report

Herpes Simplex Virus in Depth / Alynn Alexander, MD

Leer en español.

It takes a persistent scientist to stop a persistent virus.

A decade ago, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center virologist Dr. Keith Jerome began exploring the idea that lifelong infections with herpes viruses might be cured by using the DNA-cutting tools of gene therapy.

Initial research showed these techniques could knock out small quantities of latent virus, and the work of improving the results fell to Jeromeâs senior staff scientist, Dr. Martine Aubert. Five years ago, the team reported they had damaged the genes of 2%-4% of herpes virus in infected mice. Aubertâs work was an important proof of principle, but far short of a cure.

Nevertheless, she persisted.

On Aug. 18, the team led by Jerome and Aubert published a paper in Nature Communications showing that, through a series of incremental improvements on their original method, they had destroyed up to 95% of herpes virus lurking in certain nerve clusters of mice.

âThis is the first time that anybody has been able to go in and actually eliminate most of herpes in a body,â said Jerome, who is also spearheading research at Fred Hutch and the University of Washington on COVID-19. âIt is a completely different approach to herpes therapy than anybodyâs ever had before.â

Is It Safe To Breastfeed If I Have Genital Herpes

Yes as long as there isnt an open lesion on your chest or breast. If you have an active outbreak while breastfeeding, its possible to spread the infection to your nipples through touch. Careful hand-washing can prevent this spread. You shouldnt nurse from a breast that has herpes sores. You can pump breast milk until the sores heal. Dont give your baby expressed breast milk if the pump comes into contact with an open sore.

What Is Neonatal Herpes

Neonatal herpes can be a very serious infection. Babies generally contract the virus from their birthing parent during childbirth even if the parent doesnt have active lesions. They may also get HSV-1 if an adult with an active cold sore kisses them. Breastfeeding babies can also get HSV-1 from the breast if there are lesions present. But babies cant get herpes from breast milk, so its safe to pump and feed.

Herpes simplex can be more dangerous for young babies because they dont have a fully developed immune system. But most babies with neonatal herpes can recover fully with treatment.

The dangers of neonatal herpes are much higher if the infection spreads to the babys organs. If youre pregnant and have herpes, speak with your healthcare provider about how to lower the risk of passing the infection to your baby.

Signs And Symptoms Of Herpes

Both kinds of herpes cause outbreaks of painful sores on the skin. Symptoms of herpes include:

Oral herpes sores

Sometimes called cold sores, HSV-1 produces painful sores that look like blisters at first. They eventually burst and crust over. It usually takes a week to 10 days for the sores to clear up.

Genital herpes sores

The sores that appear in the genital area can come from HSV-1 or HSV-2. Like the sores on the mouth, they start as painful blisters, then dry up and heal over time.

Other sores

Although they usually show up around the mouth or genitals, herpes sores can appear anywhere on the body.

Flu-like symptoms

During a herpes outbreak, you might feel other symptoms such as fever, tiredness, or body aches.

Not all people who have herpes have frequent outbreaks. Some people might have a single outbreak then never show symptoms again. The virus may stay dormant in their body.

What Happens If Herpes Is Not Treated

Yet No Herpes simplex virus Cure Different ways to Live Herpes outbrâ¦

Herpes can be painful, but it generally does not cause serious health problems like other STDs can.

Without treatment, you might continue to have regular outbreaks, or they could only happen rarely. Some people naturally stop getting outbreaks after a while. Herpes typically does not get worse over time.
