Getting a menstrual period can cause an outbreak of genital herpes.

Also, a person may mistake the symptoms of genital herpes for those of a yeast infection or bladder infection.

Genital herpes can spread in the following ways:

  • receiving oral sex from a partner with a cold sore
  • touching a herpes sore, then touching the genitals
  • a baby can contract genital herpes during birth if the mother has the virus

People can sexually transmit the virus even if they have no visible symptoms.

It is not possible to contract genital herpes from toilet seats, bedding, swimming pools, or touching other objects. The virus can only spread from human-to-human contact.

Is There Any Resistance To Genital Herpes Medication

Resistance to drugs that treat genital herpes even after 20 years of use is very rare. Herpes medications may not work as well in patients who are very immunosuppressed and have been treated with these drugs for a long time. Each individuals response to treatment may vary. In some cases, patients may need more drugs to suppress their viral outbreaks than others.

It Will Still Take A Long Time Before These Experiments Lead To The First Human Trials Of Gene Therapy To Cure Herpes Jerome Estimates That Will Be At Least Three Years Away

The team attained its first promising results years ago using a single type of meganuclease that proved effective in cutting the herpes virus DNA, but the results were short-lived. The virus could rely on the infected cellsâ own DNA-repair programs â which donât distinguish between viral genes from their own â to fix the break most of the time.

But over time, the researchers found that they could eliminate up to 90% of the latent virus by using a mix of two or three different meganucleases. It is simply harder to repair two breaks than one. With more tinkering, the results continued to improve.

Is There A Way To Prevent Getting Herpes

You can protect yourself and your partner by taking steps to prevent an outbreak of herpes. Some things that you can do include:

-If you already have herpes, dont have sex until the outbreak is completely gone, even with a condom.

-Try to learn the signs of an impending outbreak, such as itching, tingling and burning, and stop having sex as soon as you notice.

-If you wear contact lenses, dont wet your lenses with your saliva. This could spread your herpes infection to your eyes.

-Dont have sex with your partner until your herpes sores are completely healed.

-Always tell your partner if you are infected with the herpes virus before you have sex. Even though it can be embarrassing and difficult, herpes is very common, and telling your partner will help keep the infection from spreading.

Home Remedies For Genital Herpes

Cure Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by two types of viruses: herpes simplex type 1 and herpes simplex type 2 .

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one out of every six people between the ages of 14 and 49 in the United States have genital herpes.

This kind of infection can affect anyone, but women are at a higher risk than men. Having multiple sexual partners also increases the risk of this infection.

Some common symptoms of genital herpes include pain, itching, small red bumps or tiny white blisters, sores in the genital area and painful urination. Other symptoms may include headaches, body aches and fever.

However, some people have genital herpes without any signs or symptoms.

The infectious virus spreads mostly through sexual contact. After the initial infection, the virus may remain dormant in the body and can reactivate after some time.

In fact, the signs and symptoms may recur, off and on, for years. Recurrences are generally less painful than the original outbreak, and sores generally heal more quickly.

While there is no cure for genital herpes, many home remedies can ease symptoms and reduce the risk of infecting others.

Here are the top 10 home remedies for genital herpes.

Ways Of Genital Herpes Transmission

Lets understand how genital herpes is transmitted.

  • The HSV-1 virus that causes cold sores or blisters around the mouth is transmitted through skin contact.

  • It can also spread to the genital areas while performing oral sex. The possibility of recurrence of this type of infection is not as frequent as with HSV-2 infection.

  • HSV-2, which causes genital herpes spreads through sexual contact and also skin contact. It is very contagious and spreads whether you have open sores or not.

  • You cannot contract the infection through towels, use of common toilets or touching objects that the infected person has touched because the virus doesnt survive for long outside the body.

Soaking In A Warm Bath

Soaking in a warm bath is often recommended online as a home treatment for speeding up the healing process if you have genital herpes. The theory behind this home remedy is that the hot water in the bathtub kills the virus and helps the skin heal faster.

The scientific side of this claim simply isnt true. Herpes is a viral infection that isnt affected by hot water. It remains dormant in nerve tissue inside the body, meaning that no amount of warm bathing is going to have any effect on actually treating the virus.

As such, you shouldnt expect a hot bath to reduce the amount of time required for herpes sores to disappear.

However, soaking in a warm bath isnt necessarily a bad thing if you have herpes. Warm water can soften your skin and dull the itching and discomfort that often accompanies genital herpes, making it a good way to relax if youre being bothered by a herpes outbreak.

As far as how to heal herpes sores faster goes, for that, youll need to take valacyclovir or another antiviral medication.

How To Get Rid Of Genital Herpes Fast: Is It Possible

    Vaginal Discharge

The herpes simplex virus type 2, better known as genital herpes, is a sexually transmitted infection without a known cure. Although its not yet possible to permanently get rid of genital herpes, a number of techniques are proven to speed up the recovery of an outbreak and reduce unwanted symptoms.

You may recognize a genital herpes outbreak by the appearance of blisters and lesions. Most people experience their first outbreak two to 12 days after initial exposure to the virus. After the blisters break, it may take up to four weeks for herpes ulcers to heal.

After the first outbreak, recurring outbreaks are common but dont last nearly as long. Sores tend to heal within three to seven days in recurring outbreaks, and the number of outbreak periods may even decrease over time.

Other STIs, like syphilis, cause similar symptoms. In addition to a physical exam, your healthcare provider will take a fluid sample from the blisters to test for the herpes virus. If your blisters are healed or you dont have blisters, a blood test can check for HSV-2 antibody, a marker that shows you have been exposed to the virus.

    Prevention Of Genital Herpes

Sexually transmitted infections such as genital herpes can not only be physically and emotionally draining but also affect your finances. Costs of doctors visits, medication and laboratory tests can also drain your resources. The condition needs you to maintain general good health to curb outbreaks as there is no long-term genital herpes cure. Steps for prevention include:

    • Limiting the number of sexual partners

    • Getting tested for STIs

    • Keeping your sexual partner in the loop if you have genital herpes

    • Using condoms and dental dams for oral sex

    • Use lubricants during intercourse to reduce friction which can be a trigger for an outbreak

    • Washing hands frequently if you have blisters or sores or if you are in the presence of someone with symptoms

    • Stay away from drugs or alcohol

    • Follow a healthy diet, sleep and exercise regimen

    • Eat a diet high in lysine, an amino acid, found in legumes, soy, dairy, eggs and fish

How Long After Herpes Outbreak Is It Still Contagious

For oral herpes, cold sores are usually contagious for up to 15 days and are generally no longer contagious once all symptoms have cleared, which includes the blister itself and any scabbing.

Someone carrying genital herpes should wait until 7 days after the sore heals to begin engaging in sexual activity, as the herpes virus can spread from sores not covered by a condom.

Drink a lot of water to dilute your urine. You can even add some baking soda to it. Believe me, it will help. The reason why it stings to pee is because you probably have lesions inside your urethra and regular urine is too acidic.

A pap smear is not the usual way to diagnose herpes, by the way. Did the doctor do a swab specifically for herpes? You should find out and also ask which type you’ve been diagnosed with, HSV-1 or HSV-2.

I’ve done all kind of things. I’ve even read the horror stories of the suppression not working. No because she seen it when I went back in and she said yes baby girl you got it. I’m sure I do all the symptoms match mine. So baking soda into my water. I’ll begin that this am. I’m going to change my diet too, 2 the alkaline diet. Idk what else to do. It’s horrible I’m on day 3 of the blue pills. What should I be putting down there as far as cream goes.

I don’t know if I responded to this or not yet lol but it says on my papsmear paper. They did not do a swab because she just looked at it and knew..but I have all the symptoms. My mom thinks its shingles but idk I just want to get better.

Do anyone of you do lidocaine? I used it today and it numbed it, kinda hurt some

Ok! I will go first thing on Monday. Would herpes HSV2 show up in a pap if it truly wasn’t there?

Meant to say a swab is pretty conclusive *if positive* .

Avoiding Passing Genital Herpes To A Partner

If you have herpes, you can follow some simple measures to avoid passing the virus on to your partner, and to continue to have a healthy and happy sex life. These include:

    • telling your partner if you have herpes
    • learning to recognise the warning signs that an episode is starting
    • not have sex during an episode of herpes
    • avoiding direct contact with your sores or blisters and another person
    • avoiding kissing and oral sex when you or your partner has cold sores around the mouth

If you have frequent episodes of herpes then it is worth talking to your GP or sexual health clinic about longer term treatment which may also reduce the chance of you passing on the virus to your partner.

Go to a GP or sexual health clinic if you have been diagnosed with genital herpes and need treatment for an outbreak.

Antiviral medicine may help shorten an outbreak by 1 or 2 days if you start taking it as soon as symptoms appear.

But outbreaks usually settle by themselves, so you may not need treatment.

Recurrent outbreaks are usually milder than the first episode of genital herpes.

Over time, outbreaks tend to happen less often and be less severe. Some people never have outbreaks.

Some people who have more than 6 outbreaks in a year may benefit from taking antiviral medicine for 6 to 12 months.

If you still have outbreaks of genital herpes during this time, you may be referred to a specialist.

    Preventing The Spread Of Herpes

Even when you do not have sores, you can pass the virus to someone during sexual or other close contact. To protect others:

    • Let any sexual partner know that you have herpes before having sex. Allow them to decide what to do.
    • Use latex or polyurethane condoms, and avoid sex during symptomatic outbreaks.
    • Do not kiss or have oral sex when you have a sore on the lips or inside the mouth.
    • Do not share your towels, toothbrush, or lipstick. Make sure dishes and utensils you use are washed well with detergent before others use them.
    • Wash your hands well with soap and water after touching a sore.
    • Consider using daily antiviral medicine to limit viral shedding and reduce the risk of passing the virus to your partner.
    • You may also want to consider getting your partner tested even if they have never had an outbreak. If you both have the herpes virus, there is no risk for transmission.

    Check Your Vitamin Levels

A healthy diet can buoy your body’s ability to defend against the herpes virus. “If you are deficient in certain vitamins and nutrients, you will see issues with your immune system,” Dr. Frey says.

An essential one is vitamin D: “It’s important to make sure your vitamin D levels are intact,” Dr. Frey says. A May 2021 study in âSAGE Open Medicineâ found that vitamin D has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps regulate the immune response. Yet an August 2016 study in âThe American Journal of Clinical Nutritionâ reported that up to 18 percent of people were vitamin D deficient. And keep in mind that for people living in the northern hemisphere, D plummets during the winter.

Another biggie is vitamin C. “It is an antioxidant, and building up your antioxidants is key to helping your immune system function properly,” Dr. Frey says. A November 2017 study in âNutrientsâ also points out that vitamin C supports the immune system.

Other potentially helpful nutrients include vitamin E , folic acid, iron and zinc, an element with antiviral activity that is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system and keeping inflammation in check, per an April 2015 study in âAutoimmunity Reviewsâ.

Just be sure to talk to your doctor before popping a supplement they can advise you on how much to take and how long to take it for. “Some vitamins, including D and E, are fat-soluble,” Dr. Frey says. “So you don’t want to overload your body with those.”

    How To Prevent Cold Sores

The virus that causes cold sores, herpes simplex virus type 1, is a lifelong problem, but there are measures you can take to prevent outbreaks.

Replace your toothbrushafter a cold sore. The virus can live on your toothbrush for days, and if you use a contaminated toothbrush, your lips could become re-infected.

Avoid triggers for cold sores, which can be different for each person. Some common cold sore triggers are stress, hormonal changes, illness and physical strain. Once you know your personal triggers, you can be mindful to avoid them.

Taking care of your lips with a sunblock lip balm can help prevent cold sores from other triggers, such as exposure to sunlight and dry, cracked lips. There are even lip balms specifically designed to help prevent and treat cold sore outbreaks. While this isnt a guarantee to stop cold sores, keeping your lips moisturized and protected from the sun is an easy daily step for prevention.

If you suffer from cold sores often, your dentist may recommend taking an antiviral medication regularly to help prevent outbreaks.

Although there isnt a cure for the common cold sore, there are plenty of ways to cope with it. Finding the right treatment for you might take a bit of trial and error, but with these options, you can find one that works best for you and get back to your healthy smile.
