Human Papillomavirus In Women

Herpes virus treatment

42% of US population aged 18-59 had genital herpes , most in their late teens and early 20s, are infected with HPV. There are over 100 varieties of HPV, some strains cause warts while others may lead to an increased risk of certain cancers. The HPV vaccine can help prevent more serious and high risk strains of HPV.

That said, many women do not experience symptoms and can be diagnosed with a regular Pap test by a doctor.

Unfortunately, HPV cannot be cured but the body is typically able to fight it off and in most cases symptoms will go away on their own. When HPV does not go away, it can cause more serious health problems including:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Oropharyngeal cancer
  • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis

If you think you have HPV, schedule an appointment with a PlushCare physician who can order you an HPV test.

The Third Stage Of Genital Herpes

The third stage of genital herpes infection is called the blister stage. As simple as its name, this is where blisters develop in the genital parts of your body. It sometimes begins with small red bumps that become noticeable for the following days. These bumps contain fluid-like pus that causes too much discomfort in the genitals. Avoid having sexual contact if these blisters are present.

Lastly is the healing stage. In the initial outbreak, the healing time can take two to four weeks using antiviral for herpes. However, it will take only a few days for the infected skin surface to retain its regular appearance in the subsequent outbreaks. While the skin is healing, it is necessary to protect it to avoid scarring.

How Do You Know For Sure

If the nature, location, and other characteristics of your sores are not enough for you to draw a confident conclusion, medical testing is the only way to have a definitive answer. This can mean any one of the following tests:

  • Laboratory testing : A swab of the fluid sample from the blister is obtained within 48 hours of the appearance of the first symptoms to test for the viral culture.
  • Blood Test : Conducted a couple of weeks after the initial symptoms, this searches for any antibodies produced against HSV-1 or HSV-2.
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction : The most expensive of all, it looks for HSVs genetic material

What Are The Causes Of Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is spread by skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the HSV virus, usually during genital or oral sex. It can also be spread through kissing, foreplay or non-penetrative sex.

  • HSV1 commonly causes cold sores on the lips or face.
  • HSV2 causes most genital herpes.

The HSV virus is most easily spread when there are blisters or sores, but it can still be passed even if a person has no current blisters or sores or other symptoms.

You cannot get genital herpes from things like hugging, swimming pools or toilet seats.

What Is Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. This infection is best known for the red bumps and white blisters it causes in the genital region, but genital herpes involves much more than just the visible outbreak.

The genital herpes virus progresses through five distinct phases, starting from your primary infection and proceeding through the healing stage.

During an active herpes outbreak, the blisters themselves also go through their own five-stage progression.

Is That Spot A Pimple Or A Cold Sore

Acne is the most common skin condition in teens and young adults in the United States, and its increasingly common among women in their thirties, forties, and fifties. It can cause a range of blemishes variously known as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules , cysts, and nodules, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Acne is sometimes confused with oral herpes because of the way a breakout looks. Although oral herpes sores usually appear as small, clear blisters filled with fluid, in some instances they can look more like the reddened skin and pimples associated with acne. However, herpes is typically associated with more itchiness and pain than acne.

And whereas oral herpes sores are usually found on the mouth, lips, chin, cheeks, or nose, acne can break out on any area of the face as well as on the neck, chest, back, and shoulders.

Acne is caused by excess skin oil, clogged pores, and bacteria not the herpes virus. Hormones, stress, certain medicines, and sometimes diet can trigger or worsen acne outbreaks. While a single pimple may clear up in a few days, a larger acne outbreak may last for weeks to months.

Acne is not contagious, and topical and oral medication can help heal pimples, stop new pimples from forming, and prevent scars. To avoid scarring, dont squeeze or pop pimples.

Which Genital Herpes Stage Is Safest For Sex

Genital herpes spreads mainly through sexual contact, and it can be contagious even between outbreaks due to asymptomatic shedding.

Theres no genital herpes stage that completely eliminates the possibility of infecting your partner with the virus, but herpes is more contagious in some stages than others. The primary infection stage and the blister stage are the two most highly contagious herpes phases. Its important to avoid all sexual and intimate contact during these times.

The latent stage of genital herpes, however, is the safest. Its still possible to transmit herpes to your partner with asymptomatic shedding, so you will still need to take precautions. But this stage is far less risky than others.

Why Genital Herpes Comes Back

Genital herpes is caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Once you have the virus, it stays in your body.

It will not spread in your body to cause blisters elsewhere. It stays in a nearby nerve and causes blisters in the same area.

If you can, avoid things that trigger your symptoms.

Triggers can include:

  • surgery on your genital area
  • a weakened immune system for example, from having chemotherapy for cancer

This can be fatal, but most babies recover with antiviral treatment.

The risk of your baby getting neonatal herpes is low if you have had genital herpes before.

It’s higher if you get genital herpes for the first time in pregnancy.

Testing For Genital Herpes

Stages of Herpes stock vector. Illustration of medical

If you think you may have genital herpes you should make an appointment with your GP or local sexual health services.

If there are symptoms present such as blisters, sores and ulcers, your doctor or nurse may be able to make a diagnosis straight away.

If you have visible blisters, your doctor or nurse may take a swab for testing, to check if this is herpes and what type. This swab can also test for another STI which causes blisters called syphilis.

The genital herpes swab tests are very reliable, though if the ulcer is too dry then it may be less likely to find a positive result.

How Can I Prevent Genital Herpes

If you are sexually active, you can do the following things to lower your chances of getting genital herpes:

  • Being in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who does not have herpes.
  • Using condoms the right way every time you have sex.

Be aware that not all herpes sores occur in areas that a condom can cover. Also, the skin can release the virus from areas that do not have a visible herpes sore. For these reasons, condoms may not fully protect you from getting herpes.

If your sex partner has/have genital herpes, you can lower your risk of getting it if:

  • Your partner takes an anti-herpes medicine every day. This is something your partner should discuss with his or her healthcare provider.

Cold Sores | Oral Herpes | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Treatment

You are most contagious right before, and during an outbreak, when the viral load is at its highest. It can take a few weeks for sores to completely heal, and for the virus to become dormant. When the virus lays dormant in your body, there is a much lower chance of passing herpes on to sexual partners. Because of the nature of the virus, itâs not possible to know whether you are contagious or not. Even after an outbreak has healed, there is no way to know if another one is on the way. If it is, you will be contagious. If your outbreaks follow a pattern of when they appear, you may have an indication as to whether or not an outbreak is likely. However, this is not accurate. Although you may not be displaying symptoms, you may be contagious. Over time, a person who has had herpes for a long time is less contagious than a person who has recently been infected.

What Are The Early Stages Of Genital Herpes

The early onset of genital herpes can present in a number of different ways. Generally speaking, the first symptom that you are likely to notice is inflammation of the skin around your genitals, resulting in a burning or itching sensation.

Symptoms typically surface within 1-2 weeks of infection. This stage is identified as the prodrome or beginning stage. The appearance of inflammation indicates the virus has progressed to the surface of the skin.

Symptoms during the early stages can include:

  • Burning or itching around the genitals
  • Pain when urinating
  • Fever and/or flu symptoms

For women, the first signs of genital herpes usually present inside the labia, are associated with painful urination and unusual vaginal discharge. Inflammation of the cervix can also be a sign of infection.

For men, the outbreak of genital herpes in the urethra results in the same symptoms, a burning feeling when urinating.

The incubation period is the time from exposure, to when symptoms will first appear. Whilst the average time is 1-2 weeks, this can vary with some people not displaying symptoms for months, or even years after becoming infected. Although rare, some people may never experience symptoms at all.
