I had it when I was in my 20s, and the pain in my belly was so bad that the doctors almost mistook it for appendicitis until the itchy rash appeared. An estimated 1 million cases of shingles, or herpes zoster, occur annually in the U.S. Its most common in adults over the age of 50, but as my case shows, it can show up in younger people too. Anyone whos had chickenpox is at risk of developing shingles, which occurs when the virus that has been dormant in the nerve cells reactivates and travels from the nerves out to the skin.
Shingles often starts with flu-like symptoms like fever, headache and fatigue. This is followed by pain, burning, numbness or tingling in one section of the body frequently on the left or right side of your torso. The rash usually appears in a stripe of blisters a couple of days after the pain starts. It looks a lot like chickenpox in that the blisters break open and crust over.
Occasionally, the shingles rash occurs around one eye or on the side of the neck or face. If you develop shingles around your eye, you need to treat the infection immediately because it can cause permanent eye damage.
Is It Time For Treatment
Unfortunately, if you have contracted the herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores, there’s no going back.
The virus can only be managed, and cannot be cured. However, your cold sore is extremely treatable, and rarely requires a visit to the doctor.
If your symptoms worsen, or you experience complications, you should without a doubt see your doctor.
However, in most cases, the cold sores can be cured with ointments or at home remedies.
What Is A Cold Sore
A cold sore is a red, fluid-filled blister that typically forms near the mouth but can also form on other areas of the face.
In rare cases, you can get a cold sore on your finger, nose, or the inside of your mouth.
They’re also like four-leaf clovers if you see one, you’re likely to see another as they clump together in patches.
Cold sores typically last for two weeks and sometimes longer. The virus that causes cold sores is called herpes simplex.
It’s a common virus that can spread through close contacts, such as kissing.
The sores are contagious even if they aren’t visible. Unfortunately, there is not a cure for cold sores.
When you think you’re finally rid of them, they can return as quickly, or quicker, than they left.

Hi all,
Used to quite an active member but have generally come to terms a little with my illness over the past ten months. As a back story I caught herpes off my new partner. He didn’t know he had it and it was a terribly tough time. I’ve been through a major depressive period, but to those of you struggling, there is light at the end of the tunnel. On suppressive therapy and looking after myself I have been herpes free for about 8 months which has been awesome.
Unfortunately I’ve just been on holiday and got a little lazy in taking my daily tablets… And here I am. 5 days into an awful outbreak.
Has anyone got any advice on how to heal the broken sores quicker ? I’ve been bathing and keeping them clean, washing with soap and water and applying some witch hazel but this is dragging out now, some of the sores are still not drying and obviously it is irritated and causing me pain. Walking and sitting in my work clothes is not comfortable and I just want this to end ASAP ! I forgot how annoying the outbreaks are!!
Do any of you apply anything directly to your sores ? Bearing in mind I am female and this is already a sensitive area and I don’t want to irritate myself further…

A Workhorse Of Gene Therapy
The researchers also refined their methods of transporting the molecular scissors to targeted nerve cells. From the beginning, Jerome and his team have relied on a harmless, hollowed-out virus that is drawn to the surface proteins of nerve cells. Called an adeno-associated virus vector, or AAV, it is the little workhorse of gene therapy. In this case, it is used to ferry to the infected nerve cells genetic instructions that cause them to make those meganucleases.
âWe inject the AAV vector, and it finds its way,â Aubert said.
Latent herpes viruses lurk in clusters of nerve cells called ganglia, and researchers have found that some ganglia are harder to reach than others. Over the years, they discovered that some AAV strains are better suited than others to find specific types of nerve clusters, and this has helped them fine-tune the selection of these delivery viruses to match infected cells in different places.
In their mouse experiments, the team continued to improve their results, nudging them up to a 95% reduction in herpesvirus infection in one prominent nerve cluster using a selection of two different meganucleases carried by three different flavors of AAVs. By selecting vectors that are primed for harder-to-reach nerve clusters, the group expects to continue improving their ability to eradicate the virus.
Stoddard is also tweaking the meganucleasesâ structures to make them a better fit against HSV-2.

Whereas most research on herpes has focused on suppressing the recurrence of painful symptoms, the Fred Hutch gene therapy work addresses the root cause of reactivation: the presence of latent virus in infected nerve cells.
âI hope that this study changes the dialogue around herpes research and opens up the idea that we can start thinking about cure, rather than just control of the virus,â Jerome said.
It will still take a long time before these experiments lead to the first human trials of gene therapy to cure herpes. Jerome estimates that will be at least three years away.
Herpes simplex viruses afflict billions of human beings around the globe. The team attained its first promising results years ago using a single type of meganuclease that proved effective in cutting the herpes virus DNA, but the results were short-lived. The virus could rely on the infected cellsâ own DNA-repair programs â which donât distinguish between viral genes from their own â to fix the break most of the time.
But over time, the researchers found that they could eliminate up to 90% of the latent virus by using a mix of two or three different meganucleases. It is simply harder to repair two breaks than one. With more tinkering, the results continued to improve.
