How Can You Prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections

In Argentina, coronavirus brings more economic pain

Here are some ways to help prevent STIs.

  • Limit your sex partners. Sex with one partner who has sex only with you can reduce your risk of getting an STI.
  • Talk with your partner or partners about STIs before you have sex. Find out if they are at risk for an STI. Remember that its possible to have an STI and not know it.
  • Wait to have sex with new partners until youve each been tested.
  • Dont have sex if you have symptoms of an infection or if you are being treated for an STI.
  • Use a condom every time you have sex. Condoms are the only form of birth control that also helps prevent STIs.
  • Dont share sex toys. But if you do share them, use a condom and clean the sex toys between each use.

Vaccines are available for some STIs, such as HPV. Ask your doctor for more information.

Why Do I Keep Getting Cold Sores

While many people can go years and years between cold sore outbreaks and in fact, some people dont even know they have the virus because it sometimes never causes an outbreak others get the short end of the stick and suffer from constantly recurring cold sores.

For many, this can be embarrassing, not to mention painful!

There are a number cold sore triggers that may be at the root of your recurring problems what are these, and how can you fix them?

Why Do Genital Herpes Outbreaks Occur

Everyone reacts differently to infection with HSV-2 , the most common virus that causes genital herpes. Many people develop no symptoms at all.

Some men and women develop mild symptoms that go unnoticed for the most part. Others develop extremely painful outbreaks with numerous herpetic sores. There are some known triggers for genital herpes symptoms:

  • Friction during sexual intercourse irritates the skin and exacerbates symptoms. Using water-based lubricants can help reduce skin irritation.
  • Although it is known that sunlight and the common cold trigger oral herpes outbreaks, there is no evidence that they trigger outbreaks of genital herpes.
  • Hormonal changes in women during the menstrual cycle can trigger an outbreak of genital herpes.
  • People with weak immune systems and are more likely to suffer frequent herpes outbreaks.
  • Herpes outbreaks are more common following illness, trauma, or surgery.

Remember, not everyone has the same triggers.

Symptoms can be improved by:

  • ice packs to the affected area
  • pain-relieving medication such as paracetamol
  • antiviral medication such as acyclovir, famciclovir and valaciclovir. These can reduce the severity of an episode if taken early enough . Topical antivirals usually used for cold sores on the lips or face are not suitable for use on the genitals.

What Does Genital Herpes Look Like

Someone who has been infected by the herpes virus may be asymptomatic or can have mild symptoms that go unrecognized. If you suspect that you may have been exposed, its important to be aware of what to look for. A genital herpes outbreak can be characterized by one or more blisters or ulcers. These blisters can be painful, and if they rupture, may ooze clear fluid. They can be located on the genitalia, perineum, buttocks, and upper thighs. In addition, newly infected individuals often have symptoms that include fever, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes.

At What Stage Is Herpes Contagious

Its important to note that herpes is contagious in every stage but is most contagious during the ulcer stage when the blisters have burst open, and fluid is present. Since herpes is spread through skin-to-skin contact with infected areas, it is crucial to take preventative measures to stop the spread, including using condoms and dental dams. However, its always advisable to refrain from sexual activity, touching, and kissing when experiencing a herpes outbreak. Wait until you have fully healed before having sexual intercourse, and refrain from touching your sores, since this is an easy way to spread the virus.

An effective way to prevent a herpes outbreak and the spread of herpes is by taking prescription medication from a doctor. Some common medications prescribed for herpes treatment include:

These are all taken in pill form, while severe cases may need to be treated with an acyclovir IV.

Whether oral or genital, you can start treatment during any of the various herpes outbreak stages from onset to healing to prevent another flare-up.

Herpes in women can be contained, not cured. In order to reduce the duration, severity and frequency of outbreaks, the following preventive measures should be taken:

  • Keep stress in check. While influencing factors can vary from woman to woman, exposure to extreme environments that create stress on the body should be reduced. This includes physical or emotional stimulus which promotes cortisol production in the body and triggers the nerve response that could encourage reactivation of the virus. Other common triggers include infections, hormones, exposure to UV light and certain medication.
  • Mind the diet. Certain diets may impede the frequency of herpes outbreaks in women. Alcohol, coffee, nuts, popcorn, and chocolate may encourage HSV-2 flare-ups, and some studies indicate that the amino acid arginine â found in grains and legumes â may encourage flare-ups. When monitoring dietary changes, it is important to note that every woman may experience differing triggers.
  • Consult a physician. Medication such as aciclovir and valaciclovir can restrict the frequency of outbreaks, and any changes to medications or herbal supplements should be brought to the attention of a healthcare professional to determine the potential implications associated with the herpes virus.

The First Herpes Outbreak Is Typically The Worst

The initial herpes outbreak often occurs within a couple weeks of contracting the virus from an infected individual. This is known as the incubation period, where HSV is multiplying inside the body until the point it causes an outbreak. The first outbreak of herpes is usually the most severe, lasting approximately two to three weeks. Subsequent outbreaks are often less pronounced, and flare ups tend to decrease over time.

Common early stage symptoms of herpes in women may include:

  • Flu or fever-like symptoms
  • Pain in the legs, buttocks, or vaginal area
  • A change in vaginal discharge
  • An increasingly uncomfortable feeling of pressure in the area beneath the abdomen
  • Difficulty urinating, or pain during bowel movements

In many cases, the flu-like and body ache symptoms that occur during the initial presentation of the HSV-2 virus do not appear in subsequent outbreaks.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2

Many times, the first episode of a genital herpes outbreak looks and feels the same, whether its caused by HSV-1 or HSV-2. The presentation of the blisters or ulcers looks exactly the same. Unlike HSV-1, HSV-2 may cause frequent, symptomatic genital ulcers. Recent studies have demonstrated that the HSV-2 is frequently shed and can be transmitted from the genitals even when there are no symptoms.

HSV-2 shedding can also be detected throughout the genital tract and may be associated with genital tract inflammation. Researchers believe that this is what may contribute to the increased risk of acquiring HIV.

I’ve had to tell multiple partners that i was infected with HSV. I was PETRIFIED. horribly. most important thing is to tell them before there is any sexual relations. I’ve made the mistake of telling partners after i had already had relations with them and a few of them felt like i trapped them with this although none of them have it. The guy i’m currently with was one of the guys i told before we had any relations. He was very understanding about it because he knew the guy who gave it to me. He accepts me despite the fact that i have hsv and i’m 99% sure that it’s because i told him before anything happened. So, best advice i can give about telling someone is to tell them before there is any sexual contact… maybe not the first thing you tell him but definitely before. Hope this helps!

  • How can the herpes virus affect pregnancy?

If a woman is pregnant and infected with HSV, it can be passed to the fetus during birth while passing through the womans infected birth canal. This is most likely to occur if a woman first becomes infected with HSV during pregnancy and in a woman who has her first outbreak late in pregnancy. But it also can occur during a recurrent outbreak in a woman who was infected before pregnancy, although the risk is much lower.

If you have sores or warning signs of an outbreak at the time of delivery, you may need to have a cesarean delivery to reduce chance of infection. The decision depends on many factors, including where the sores are on your body and whether the fetus would come into contact with them during delivery.

  • Can I still breastfeed my baby if I have the herpes virus?

Yes, in most cases. The herpes virus cannot be passed to a baby through breast milk. However, the baby could get infected by touching a sore on your body. Make sure any sores that the baby could come into contact with are covered when you hold your baby or while breastfeeding. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after feeding your baby. If you have sores on your breast, you should not breastfeed your baby from that breast.
