Where Does The Herpes Virus Live In The Body

Herplex Herpes Treatment

The herpes simplex viruses are latent, meaning they can live in the body without causing symptoms. After the initial infection, the virus gets into the nerve roots and spreads to the sensory nerve ganglia, the junctions where nerves from different parts of the body come together. For the genital area, the ganglia are adjacent to the spinal cord in the lower back. For orofacial herpes , the ganglia are located behind the cheek bone.

What Abreva Cold Sore Cream Works For

Abreva® Cream is specifically designed to treat and heal cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 . Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blisters that develop on the lips or around the mouth. They can be painful and unsightly, which is why some people turn to natural remedies for cold sores, such as taking lysine supplements, when they get one. The hope is that the cold sore will heal faster, but most natural remedies can only provide superficial symptom relief. For clinically proven healing power, turn to Abreva®.

Some find it hard to tell the difference between a cold sore and a pimple. Pimples can appear anywhere on the face and typically have a white or black head, whereas cold sores form liquid-filled blisters that later crust over. If in doubt, ask a pharmacist.

Abreva® Cream can be used by those over 12 years old. Abreva® Cream is not recommended to treat cold sores during pregnancy or while breast-feeding unless advised by a doctor.

Treating Herpes Simplex Viruses

Describe the New Genital Herpes Therapeutic Vaccine and How it Works

While theres no cure for any type of herpes, there are treatments to help manage the symptoms, such as over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Anti-inflammatory drugs can also soothe the pain and itching. There are ointments available over the counter for HSV-1 that can help with the pain, but Abreva is the only one that has been shown to make the sores go away faster.

Many people with herpes simplex viruses take antiviral medications. Oral drugs such as Valtrex, Zovirax and Famvir are most effective when taken as soon as possible after the person becomes infected they can slow the buildup of the virus in the nerve cells. Zovirax and another antiviral medication called Denavir are also available in a cream that can be applied to the sores, but most health care providers prescribe them for HSV-1 only, believing that genital blisters should be left dry and uncovered to speed healing.

Although they cant completely stop the virus from replicating itself, these types of drugs interfere with the replication process. When outbreaks do occur, theyre usually less severe and go away sooner. There has also been research to show that some people taking antiviral medications daily shed far fewer virions 94 percent fewer, according to one study .

The two herpes simplex viruses are just two of the eight herpes viruses. Next, well look at the virus that causes chicken pox: varicella zoster.

Treatment Of Common Cutaneous Herpes Simplex Virus Infections

DAVID H. EMMERT, M.D., Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Am Fam Physician. 2000 Mar 15 61:1697-1704.

Herpes simplex virus infection is increasingly common in the United States. New antiviral medications have expanded treatment options for the two most common cutaneous manifestations, orolabial and genital herpes. Acyclovir therapy remains an effective and often less expensive option. Famciclovir and valacyclovir offer improved oral bioavailability and convenient oral dosing schedules but are more expensive than acyclovir. Patients who have six or more recurrences of genital herpes per year can be treated with one of the following regimens: acyclovir, 400 mg twice daily valacyclovir, 1 g daily or famciclovir, 250 mg twice daily. These regimens are effective in suppressing 70 to 80 percent of symptomatic recurrences. Episodic treatment of recurrent genital herpes is of questionable benefit, but it may be helpful in appropriately selected patients. There is little evidence indicating benefit from treatment of recurrent orolabial herpes, which tends to be mild and infrequent.

Genital Herpes Hiv And Sexual Health

Genital herpes is one of the most common co-infections for people living with HIV and can be a more serious condition if youre HIV positive meaning that outbreaks may last longer and blisters can be more severe. If youre having recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes, you should have an HIV test, as this may be a sign of a weakened immune system caused by HIV.

Having an STI such as genital herpes can increase your risk of getting and passing on HIV, as the blisters and sores provide an easy way for HIV to get into your body and cause an infection. People living with HIV who arent on treatment or who have a lower CD4 count are especially vulnerable to other infections, like herpes.

If youre taking antiretroviral treatment for HIV, its important to discuss with your doctor how treatment for herpes may interact with your HIV drugs.

    How Test Accuracy Is Measure

The accuracy of all medical tests, including herpes tests, is measured based on two values: sensitivity and specificity.

Sensitivityis how often a test correctly identifies someone with a disease. A test that is 90% sensitive will correctly identify 90 people out of 100 who have the disease. Ten people will have a false-negative result.

Specificity, on the other hand, refers to a testâs ability to correctly identify someone who doesnât have the disease. If a test is 90% specific, that means that 90 people out of 100 will be correctly diagnosed as not having a disease and that 10 people will have a false-positive result.

The higher the sensitivity and specificity, the lower the chances of a false result.
