What Causes Herpes Simplex 2 To Flare Up

Feline Herpes Flare Up Symptoms And Treatment

Herpes (oral & genital) – causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, pathology

The medical term for feline herpes is feline viral rhinopneumonitis or feline herpesvirus type 1 . It is also known as cat flu or cat herpes. It is a virus that is prone to a feline herpes flare up.

What is a feline herpes flare up?

A flare up is when the herpes virus goes from the dormant stage to the active stage and symptoms start to appear.

How long does a flare up last?

All three of my cats have feline herpes. When Zoli entered the family he had gotten it from his mother and passed it along to Feri and Gyula. Since Zoli already had it, I didnt know what to expect when Feri and Gyula contracted it. All I know is the vet said that they would be sick and lethargic for a couple of weeks. That was kind of an understatement.

Feri got it first and was sick for about 2 weeks. He sneezed and slept a lot. Gyula got it near Feris tail end of the disease and he was sick for almost a month. I could tell he was achy and miserable. So the symptoms mimicked the flu for us.

If I catch a flare up quickly, it may go away within 24 hours. If I do not, then its usually 3 to 4 days. They arent as terribly sick as when they first got the virus. Now, it is more of sneezing and watery eyes.

Is the feline herpes virus contagious?

What are the symptoms of cat herpes?

Cat herpes symptoms mimic having a cold. Cats may:

  • Look like or have conjunctivitis
  • Have goop in the corner of their eyes
  • Be super sleepy

Do Condoms Help Prevent The Spread Of Genital Herpes

Yes. To prevent transmission of herpes, we recommend that condoms be used 100% of the time. Many patients will shed the virus and be contagious when they dont have symptoms. Studies have shown that asymptomatic shedding occurs between 1% and 3% of the time in patients with HSV II genital infections. Many new herpes infections occur from partners who are shedding the virus asymptomatically, so condoms are highly recommended.

Condoms may not be an attractive option for monogamous couples or for couples who desire to become pregnant. Couples may opt to have serological tests to determine if either partner has an asymptomatic infection. In close monogamous relationships, the risks of transmission can be weighed against other relationship issues, such as intimacy and pregnancy.

How Can I Prevent Cold Sores

You can help reduce the spread of the herpes viruses that cause cold sores. This can help both you and others avoid getting cold sores. Follow these tips:

  • Do not kiss others if you have a cold sore. Also avoid kissing someone with a cold sore.

  • Do not share eating utensils, lip balm, razors, or towels with someone who has a cold sore.

  • Wash your hands after touching the area of a cold sore. The herpes virus can be carried from your face to your hands when you touch the area of a cold sore. When this happens, wash your hands thoroughly, for at least 20 seconds. When you cant wash with soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

  • Disinfect things you touch often, such as phones and keyboards.

  • If you feel a cold sore coming on, do the same things you would do when a cold sore is present to avoid spreading the virus.

  • Use condoms to help prevent passing on the viruses through sex.

Who Might Get Genital Herpes

Genital herpes affects sexually active teens and adults of all genders and races. It can spread if you have multiple sexual partners and dont use condoms, including dental dams.

Women are more at risk. Delicate vaginal tissue can tear, making it easier for the infection to get in. Black women are especially vulnerable. An estimated 1 in 2 Black women between the ages of 14 and 49 is infected with HSV-2, the virus that causes genital herpes.

Recurrences are repeat symptoms which appear at or close to the place where the infection was first noticed. These are often fairly minor and may be no more than a small spot that heals in a few days. They may be accompanied by sensations itches or nerve twinges. They are unlikely to be as severe as first symptoms and may be almost unnoticed.

How Common Is Genital Herpes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 40 million to 50 million adults in the United States have genital herpes. HSV II infection is more common in women and in people who have had more than five sexual partners. Most people with HSV II do not know they have it, because it does not always cause symptoms.

Risk For Genital Herpes

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , about 1 in 6 Americans ages 14 to 49 years have genital herpes. While HSV-2 remains the main cause of genital herpes, HSV-1 has significantly increased as a cause, most likely because of oral-genital sex. Except for people in monogamous relationships with uninfected partners, everyone who is sexually active is at risk for genital herpes.

Risk factors for genital herpes include:

  • History of an STD
  • First sexual intercourse at an early age
  • High number of sexual partners
  • Low socioeconomic status

Women are more susceptible to HSV-2 infection because herpes is more easily transmitted from men to women than from women to men. About 1 in 5 women, compared to 1 in 9 men, have genital herpes. African-American women are at particularly high risk.

People with compromised immune systems, such as those who have HIV, are at very high risk for genital herpes. These people are also at risk for more severe complications from herpes. Drugs that suppress the immune system, and organ transplantation, can also weaken the immune system and increase the risk for contracting genital herpes.

Genital Herpes Is Spread By Skin

The virus can be spread when someone with HSV has an episode or an outbreak characterised by having a sore, blister, ulcer or skin split . It can also be spread between episodes, when there is no sore, blister, ulcer or skin split present called asymptomatic viral shedding.

During viral shedding the virus is on the skin surface and can be spread through genital skin-to-skin contact, or from the mouth or face to genital skin during contact.

Controlling Cold Sore Flareups

A Vaccine Pathway for Herpes Virus with Gregory Smith, PhD

If you already have HSV-1, you can take measures to prevent outbreaks like cold sores. As with most illnesses, its important to eat well, exercise and get enough sleep to manage stress and give your body stamina to fight off sickness. In the case of HSV-1, it also helps to protect your face and lips from sun exposure by using sunscreen and wearing a wide-brimmed hat.

When a cold sore does appear, you can prevent spreading HSV-1 by practicing good hygiene. Try not to touch it, and if you do, make sure you wash your hands right away. That will help keep you from spreading it to other parts of your body, or to other people. Also, change your toothbrush and throw out any creams, balms, ointments or makeup youve been using on your face or lips.

Weve written before about natural ways to treat cold sores, including applying licorice root, peppermint oil, vanilla oil or extract, tea tree oil, lemon balm or manuka honey directly to the sore. Aloe vera gel also can help a cold sore heal and in lab studies has shown the potential to fight viruses, including HSV.

Thymoquinone , one of the active compounds in black cumin seed oil, has been studied for exhibiting antiviral properties. It is considered an immune system modulator, meaning it may help balance an overactive immune response. In one study, TQ was found to inhibit the entry and cell to cell spread of HSV-1.

How To Treat A Herpes Flare

If you have herpes, you may experience a flare-up from time to time. There are sometimes periods of outbreaks, followed by periods of remission. Although it is more likely to spread the virus if you have sex during an outbreak, you can still spread it when youre in remission.

If you have a herpes flare-up, you may experience the following:

  • Small blisters around your genitals, rectum, or mouth
  • With your first outbreak, the symptoms may last for 2-4 weeks
  • The small blisters break and leave painful ulcers
  • Recurring outbreaks may be shorter
  • You may have lesions outside of your genital area, including your buttocks, thighs, finger, or eye

If you have symptoms of a herpes flare-up, its important to call the office right away. Dr. Patterson can prescribe an antiviral medication.

The antiviral medication should be a mainstay of managing your herpes outbreaks, especially if they occur regularly. Antiviral medications can suppress herpes outbreaks and prevent future outbreaks, as well as decreasing the likelihood that you can transmit it to your partners.

Primary Genital Herpes Infection

Primary or first genital HSV infections may be mild and unnoticed, but should lesions develop, the severity is generally greater than in recurrences.

Some people also have flu-like symptoms with fever, headache and muscular aches and pains. Symptoms tend to be more severe in women than in men.

Following the initial infection, immunity develops but does not fully protect against further episodes . Where immunity is deficient, for example, in those living with HIV/AIDS, both initial and recurrent infections tend to occur more frequently and to be more pronounced.

Herpes: causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment

Three drugs are approved to treat genital herpes:

These medications are antiviral drugs called nucleoside analogues. The drugs are used initially to treat a first attack of herpes, and then afterward to either treat recurrent outbreaks or reduce frequency of recurrences .

No drug can cure herpes simplex virus. The infection may recur after treatment has been stopped. Even during therapy, an infected person can still transmit the virus to another person. Drugs can, however, reduce the severity of symptoms, improve healing times, and prevent recurrences.

Antiviral drugs for genital herpes are generally given as pills that are taken by mouth. If people experience very severe disease or complications, they need to be hospitalized and receive an antiviral drug intravenously. Acyclovir is also available as an ointment, which can be used as an adjunct for treatment of initial genital herpes.

Caffeine and alcohol can also impair immunity and spark herpes outbreaks, says Gordon. Food cravings may indicate possible allergens, which may also cause flare-ups, she notes. Gordon suggests an elimination diet in which you avoid the worst foods for two months. When you no longer have herpes symptoms, you can reintroduce them one by one into your diet to see which might affect your herpes outbreaks.

Treatment Vs Preventative Vaccines

The biggest difference between treatment and preventative vaccines is which groups of people they would benefit. Treatment vaccines are intended for people who have been infected with HSV, boosting the immune system to fight the virus. They would help improve symptoms, help blisters heal faster, and lower the risk of spreading the virus to other people.

The second type of vaccine a preventative vaccine is the most common type of vaccine we get as children and adults, helping to train our immune system against a germ before we encounter it. In other words, a preventative HSV vaccine would prevent you from being infected with HSV. The and the are examples of preventative herpes vaccines currently available, but they will not prevent HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Why Herpes Flare Up

Even though HSV sores can hurt and be unsightly, most cases of herpes do not cause serious illness. The sores go away in a few days. Contact the health provider if:

  • Sores are present and you think it might be a first herpes infection. The diagnosis is usually made by examining the sores. If the sores have not healed, sometimes a laboratory test is done.
  • Sores do not heal by themselves or show signs of infection such as pus, spreading redness or fever.
  • Sores are near the eyes.
  • You have another health condition with a weakened immune system.

Why Genital Herpes Comes Back

Genital herpes is caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Once you have the virus, it stays in your body.

It will not spread in your body to cause blisters elsewhere. It stays in a nearby nerve and causes blisters in the same area.

If you can, avoid things that trigger your symptoms.

Triggers can include:

  • surgery on your genital area
  • a weakened immune system for example, from having chemotherapy for cancer

Herpes Encephalitis And Meningitis

Herpes Encephalitis

Herpes simplex encephalitis is inflammation of the brain caused by either HSV-1 or HSV-2. It is a rare but extremely serious brain disease. Untreated, herpes encephalitis is fatal most of the time. Respiratory arrest can occur within the first 24 to 72 hours. Fortunately, rapid diagnostic tests and treatment with acyclovir have significantly improved survival rates and reduced complication rates. Nearly all who recover have some impairment, ranging from very mild neurological changes to paralysis.

Herpes Meningitis

Herpes simplex meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that line the brain and spinal cord. It is mainly caused by HSV-2. Like encephalitis, meningitis symptoms include headache, fever, stiff neck, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. Fortunately, herpes meningitis usually resolves after about a week without complications, although symptoms can recur.

What Are The Symptoms Of Herpes Virus

A medical condition closeup of the common coldsore virus herpes simplex ...

The symptoms of herpes are exceptionally easy to recognize and unlike many other STDs, it is hard to mistake it for some other condition. The tell-tale signs include blisters and sores on the site of the infection . The blisters usually burst a couple of days after they originally manifested, leaving painful sores behind. In the case of HSV-1, non-genital herpes, the blisters will appear on the lips and around the mouth, with similar development.

However, these most recognizable symptoms are often accompanied by other more subtle ones which can often be missed. These include:

  • General malaise
  • Aches and pains in the lower back, legs and groin
  • Painful urination

Another characteristic of herpes is the cyclic successions of periods of activity and dormancy. So, all of the mentioned symptoms will, even without treatment, eventually dissipate and the infection will seem to have gone away. However, it is still present in the system, just dormant for the time being. When the symptoms reappear, this occurrence is usually called reactivation of the virus. Reactivations can happen either rhythmically or completely randomly, but in either case, their frequency and severity will gradually diminish as the years go by.
