What Causes Herpes On Lips

What Triggers A Cold Sore

Cold Sores | Oral Herpes | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Treatment

After you have been infected with HSV-1, the virus never goes away. It remains dormant in a group of nerve cells in your face called the trigeminal ganglion.

When the virus is triggered, or activated, it wakes up and travels through your nerves to your lips, where a cold sore develops. After an outbreak, the virus goes back to sleep in your body.

What triggers a cold sore in one person might not cause an outbreak in another person. Some people with HSV-1 never develop a cold sore.

A cold sore can be activated by a variety of factors, including:

  • Hormonal changes during menstruation or pregnancy
  • Fever and illness, such as cold or flu
  • Damaged, dry or cracked lips

What Is A Cold Sore Next Steps

While cold sores are an unpleasant and potentially unsightly illness to experience, they are unlikely to cause lasting harm. Using a cold sore treatment such as Abreva® Cream to minimize your recovery time not only makes it easier for you to go about your life as normal, it also helps reduce the time you are at your most contagious, with visible blisters.

Apply as directed as soon as you feel a tingle to reduce your recovery period to as little as 2½ days.*** Find out more about how Abreva® Cream works and where to buy Abreva® Cream.

Can The Virus Be Transmitted During Childbirth

According to

You may notice some tingling, burning, or itching at the site of the infection before small, painful blisters appear. There could be one blister or a small cluster. These blisters will eventually burst and crust over before they begin to heal.

The blisters that develop during a primary infection may take to fully heal. These blisters can still transmit the virus until theyve healed completely.

Sores often itch, and genital sores may cause pain during urination.

Suppressive Therapy For Recurrences

To suppress outbreaks, treatment requires taking pills daily on a long-term basis. Acyclovir and famciclovir are taken twice a day for suppression. Valacyclovir is taken once a day. The doses for these antiviral drugs are reduced in people with impaired renal function.

Suppressive treatment can reduce the frequency of outbreak recurrences by 70% to 80%. It is generally recommended for people who have frequent recurrences . Because herpes recurrences often diminish over time, you should discuss annually with your provider whether you should stay with drug therapy or discontinue it.

There is some evidence that valacyclovir may help prevent herpes transmission, particularly in situations where one heterosexual partner has HSV-2 and the other partner does not. However, this drug does not completely prevent transmission. While taking any suppressive therapy for genital herpes, it is still important to regularly use latex condoms and to avoid any sexual activity during recurrences.

How Are Cold Sores Treated

Cold sores usually go away in about 1 to 2 weeks. No medicines can make the virus go away. But some treatments can help make cold sores less painful and not last as long:

  • Cold compresses can help with discomfort.
  • Prescription or over-the-counter treatments are sometimes recommended by the doctor.
  • Cool foods and drinks can help make eating more comfortable.
  • Taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen may ease pain. Don’t take aspirin, as it’s linked to a rare but serious illness called Reye syndrome.

Can Herpes Simplex Be Prevented

As sun exposure often triggers facial herpes simplex, sun protection using high protection factor sunscreens and other measures are important.

Antiviral drugs will stop HSV multiplying once it reaches the skin or mucous membranes but cannot eradicate the virus from its resting stage within the nerve cells. They can, therefore, shorten and prevent attacks but a single course cannot prevent future attacks. Repeated courses may be prescribed, or the medication may be taken continuously to prevent frequent attacks.

Medical Treatment For Oral Herpes

Oral herpes symptoms may resolve without treatment within one to two weeks.

If needed, your healthcare provider will prescribe certain antiviral medications to treat your condition. These medications help with any pain you may be experiencing as well as alleviate symptoms more quickly.

Medications that are used to treat HSV-1 include acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir, which are most effective if taken when initial warning signs of an incoming flare-up appear and before blisters develop.

Cold sores are caused by a virus called herpes simplex.

Once you have the virus, it stays in your skin for the rest of your life. Sometimes it causes a cold sore.

Most people are exposed to the virus when they’re young after close skin to skin contact, such as kissing, with someone who has a cold sore.

It does not usually cause any symptoms until you’re older. You will not know if it’s in your skin unless you get a cold sore.

How Common Is Herpes Simplex Virus Of The Mouth

Oral herpes is very common.

According to the National Institutes of Health , about 90 percent of adults have been exposed to the virus by the time theyre 50.1 But this doesnt mean they have it.

Some people are exposed but never contract the virus, while others catch it immediately after exposure.

Statistics show that as of 2016, an estimated 3.7 billion people under the age of 50, or 67% of the global population, had an oral or genital HSV-1 infection.

The highest prevalence of the infection was in Africa and the lowest was in the Americas .2

There Is More Than One Type Of Herpes Infection

There are two types of herpes simplex infection: herpes simplex virus type 1 and herpes simplex virus type 2 . Cold sores around the mouth are generally caused by HSV-1. Most cases of genital herpes are caused by HSV-2. Cold sores on the mouth can cause genital infection during oral sex for people who do not already carry the cold sore virus. There are many other viruses that are also in the herpes virus family, however the infection and symptoms are different. One example is varicella zoster virus which causes chickenpox and shingles.

What Is The Treatment For Cold Sores

Cold sores can usually be treated quite easily, especially if the treatment is started immediately after the first signs appear. There are several factors that determine the exact type of treatment, which are:

  • Is it a pronounced initial infection or a usually milder reactivation?
  • Does severe pain or fever occur?
  • How regularly do the symptoms occur?
  • Does the affected person have a general immunodeficiency?

The treatment differs depending on these considerations. If the symptoms are rare, fairly mild, and the current outbreak is already in one of the later stages , treatment may not be necessary. The available drugs counteract the spreading of the virus. For this reason, treatment with so-called antiviral medication is much more effective if it is started early, even before the virus has been able to multiply and before a blister has formed.

Medication for cold sores:

There is some evidence that oral antivirals may be most effective when prescribed in cases where a patients cold sore has a known trigger, such as strong sunlight. In such cases, an antiviral tablet may be taken immediately after the person has been exposed to the trigger. This is another form of lip herpes prophylaxis and can prevent an outbreak.

There is no evidence that the combination of oral antivirals and antiviral creams reduces the duration of an outbreak more than the use of only one of the two preparations.,,,,

Episodic Therapy For Recurrences

For a recurrent episode, treatment takes 1 to 5 days, depending on the type of medication and dosage. You should begin the medication as soon as you notice any signs or symptoms of herpes, preferably during the prodrome stage that precedes the outbreak of lesions.

In order for episodic therapy to be effective, it must be taken no later than 1 day after a lesion appears. If taken during prodrome, episodic therapy may help prevent an outbreak from occurring or reduce its severity. If taken at the first sign of a lesion, it can help speed healing.

Is Oral Herpes Permanent

Yes. Once a person contracts the herpes virus, they will always have it.

However, this doesnt mean theyll have active recurrences throughout their lives. There are things you can do to reduce the risk of recurrence. For example:

  • Mitigate fevers
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight

If unavoidable circumstances such as menstruation, surgery, or physical injuries trigger an outbreak, the treatments listed above can reduce your risk of an outbreak and/or lessen the severity of an outbreak.

Symptoms Of Oral Herpes

The symptoms of oral herpes vary and depend on whether you are experiencing your first outbreak or a subsequent occurrence.

First Outbreak

The first outbreak of oral herpes is usually much worse than subsequent outbreaks. During the first outbreak, you may get cold sores in and around your mouth. Some people also get them in their throat. During this preliminary outbreak, you may also have flu-like symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes, or you may just feel generally ill.

The outbreak of cold sores starts as fluid-filled blisters that are very contagious. After a few days, the blisters will leak fluid and become sores. The sores may last up to a week before they start to heal.

Subsequent outbreaks

At least 25% of people who get oral herpes have a secondary outbreak after the first one. Subsequent outbreaks can include symptoms in the area where the cold sores will develop such as:

You will learn what getting a cold sore feels like for you. Subsequent outbreaks are usually much milder than the initial one.

How Can I Reduce My Risk Of Getting Genital Herpes

Herpes (oral & genital) – causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, pathology

If you are sexually active, you can do the following things to lower your chances of getting genital herpes:

  • Be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who is not infected with an STD
  • Using latex condoms the right way every time you have sex.

Be aware that not all herpes sores occur in areas that are covered by a latex condom. Also, herpes virus can be released from areas of the skin that do not have a visible herpes sore. For these reasons, condoms may not fully protect you from getting herpes.

If you are in a relationship with a person known to have genital herpes, you can lower your risk of getting genital herpes if:

  • Your partner takes an anti-herpes medication every day. This is something your partner should discuss with his or her doctor.

Who Gets Herpes Simplex

Most people get HSV-1 as an infant or child. This virus can be spread by skin-to-skin contact with an adult who carries the virus. An adult does not have to have sores to spread the virus.

A person usually gets HSV-2 through sexual contact. About 20% of sexually active adults in the United States carry HSV-2. Some people are more likely to get HSV-2. These people:

  • Have had many sex partners

  • Had sex for the first time at a young age

  • Have another sexually transmitted infection

  • Have a weakened immune system due to a disease or medicine

Complications Of Cold Sores

Mayo Clinic Minute: 3 things you didn’t know about cold sores

Cold sores are usually mild, but may cause complications in rare cases. People with weak immune systems caused by illness or treatments such as chemotherapy are particularly at risk of complications.

Dehydration sometimes occurs if drinking fluids becomes painful. Young children are particularly at risk of becoming dehydrated.

The herpes simplex virus can also spread to other parts of your body. Examples of when this can occur include:

  • skin infections these often occur if the virus comes into contact with broken skin, such as a cut or graze, or a skin condition such as eczema
  • herpetic whitlow this causes painful sores and blisters to appear on and around your fingers
  • herpetic keratoconjunctivitis this causes swelling and irritation of your eye area and sores to develop on your eyelids

Left untreated, herpetic keratoconjunctivitis can cause the cornea, the transparent layer at the front of your eye, to become infected, which can eventually lead to blindness.

Its therefore important not to touch your eyes if you have an unhealed cold sore. If you must touch your eyes for example, to remove contact lenses wash your hands thoroughly first.

In very rare cases, encephalitis, a condition where the brain becomes inflamed and swollen, can be caused by the cold sore virus spreading to the brain. It can be treated with intravenous injections of antiviral medications, such as aciclovir.
