Does Herpes Cause Frequent Urination

When To Contact Your Doctor

Urinary Frequency, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.

Testing for STDs can help to eliminate sexual health conditions as the cause of your painful urination, or diagnose it, allowing for quick and effective treatment. However, if your condition is not caused by an STD, its important to be checked out by a GP to get to the root of your problem as, left untreated, such infections can become severe and your pain may get worse over time.

How Soon Do Symptoms Appear

Symptoms tend to come on suddenly anywhere from two days to two weeks after youve been exposed to the virus.

The appearance of symptoms is called an outbreak. After your initial outbreak is treated, you may have subsequent outbreaks during the next year and occasionally throughout the rest of your life.

Herpes Outbreak Frequency: What You Can Expect

Medically reviewed by Michele Emery, DNP

If youre reading this, its likely that you or someone you care about may have herpes. Well, first, we want to remind you that HSV-1 and HSV-2 are exceptionally manageable viruses, and that the anxiety and fear youre experiencing right now, while normal, may be unwarranted. Depending on the type of herpes virus youre infected with and your symptomatic status, your herpes outbreak frequency can become a common occurrence or be something youll rarely, if ever, have to deal with.

In this guide, well look at the statistics for herpes outbreaks. Well also look at how outbreaks can differ between HSV-1 and HSV-2, as well as whether or not people with an asymptomatic herpes infection need to worry about outbreaks at all.

Finally, well cover some of the treatments you can use to make treating and managing herpes outbreaks an easier process.

What Are The Different Types Of Herpes

Signs and Symptoms of Bladder Cancer

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV I and HSV II. HSV I commonly causes oral herpes, or cold sores. This virus can show up as an upper respiratory tract infection during early childhood. HSV II is the cause of most cases of genital herpes. However, it is possible for HSV I to cause genital herpes and HSV II to cause oral herpes.

Clinicians cannot tell the difference between the two types by physical examination alone, but there are differences between the two viruses. For example, genital herpes caused by HSV II is much more likely to recur. This diagnosis can be helpful in establishing a health care plan.

    Take Care During Pregnancy

A woman who gets genital herpes while she is pregnant could pass the infection to her baby during delivery. Herpes can make newborns seriously ill.

If you are pregnant, follow these steps:

    • Tell your doctor if you have been exposed to genital herpes or have had an outbreak in the past.
    • Let your doctor know if you are currently having an outbreak, especially if you are in the last part of your pregnancy.
    • Avoid unsafe sex. Herpes is often transmitted by people who don’t know they are infected and don’t have symptoms. Use condoms.
    • Avoid receiving oral sex from partners who have cold sores. Herpes in newborns can be caused by HSV-1, the virus that most commonly causes cold sores. Most experts advise pregnant women not to receive oral sex in the last 3 months of their pregnancy. It increases their risk of genital infection with HSV-1.

Antiviral medicine can be used safely in pregnancy to reduce the risk of an outbreak at the time of delivery. This lower risk, in turn, makes it less likely that delivery by caesarean section will be needed.

You Ate Something Thats Causing The Burning

Believe it or not, what you eat or drink can potentially produce painful urination, Dr. Horton says.

Spicy or acidic foods, including citrus fruit like oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit, as well as caffeine and alcohol can irritate the bladder and trigger burning when you pee, she says.

âFix it:â Because not all people are affected by the same food or drinks, it is helpful to keep a food diary to track which things caused you a twinge on the toilet, Dr. Horton says.

Another smart strategy: Drink lots of water to dilute your urine. âVery concentrated urine can also cause discomfort and burning,â Dr. Horton says.

Differences In Dysuria For Men Vs Women

    Herpes Zoster (Shingles)

Anatomical differences between males and females can cause differences in the likelihood of certain conditions and how they affect you.7 For example, because females have shorter urethras , its easier for bacteria to enter the bladder, making UTIs in women more common than in men. Common STD symptoms like discharge can also be more difficult for women to notice.

    Diagnosis

If they suspect an infection, they may also order certain tests to aid in the diagnosis, such as urinalysis or STD tests. If you believe your painful urination is caused by an STD, you can skip the time and cost of a doctor visit and quickly take our full 10 test STD panel. If tested positive, we have doctors available who can provide consultation and even write prescriptions for certain STDs.

    Testing For Genital Herpes

If you think you may have genital herpes you should make an appointment with your GP or local sexual health services.

If there are symptoms present such as blisters, sores and ulcers, your doctor or nurse may be able to make a diagnosis straight away.

If you have visible blisters, your doctor or nurse may take a swab for testing, to check if this is herpes and what type. This swab can also test for another STI which causes blisters called syphilis.

The genital herpes swab tests are very reliable, though if the ulcer is too dry then it may be less likely to find a positive result.

What Are The Symptoms Of Genital Herpes

Genital herpes most often appears as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. When these blisters burst they leave the tender sores known as ulcers. The first time a person has a herpes outbreak, the ulcers may take two to four weeks to heal. The next outbreaks may not occur for weeks, months, or even later. When they do, they usually are less severe than the first outbreak. Herpes infection doesn’t go away, but the outbreaks tend to become less frequent over time.

    • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the genital region
    • A burning sensation while urinating or having intercourse
    • Painful urination, difficulty urinating, or a frequent need to urinate
    • Watery blisters in the genital area

Many people with recurrent herpes experience warning signals up to 48 hours before an outbreak. These may consist of tingling, itching, or pain at the site of the eruption, or pain running down into the buttocks or to the knees.

A doctor can diagnose genital herpes by looking at the outbreak and taking a sample of tissue or fluid from the sores. There are also blood tests for HSV-1 and HSV-2. Although they cant pinpoint when the infection was acquired or predict when an outbreak is likely to happen again, they are useful for diagnosing the condition if the outbreak is healing or has already healed.

Medications are available to treat and reduce or prevent recurrent herpes outbreaks.

How Does Genital Herpes Affect Pregnancy

Herpes simplex virus doesnt affect fertility or your ability to conceive. Pregnant women diagnosed with HSV-2 should start a daily antiviral at 36 weeks of pregnancy as prescribed, to prevent outbreaks during delivery. If you have an active infection at the time of childbirth, you can pass the herpes virus to your baby. Neonatal herpes puts a baby at risk for blindness, brain damage, skin infections and death. Your healthcare provider will perform a cesarean section to lower this risk.
