How Do People Get Genital Herpes
Infections are transmitted through contact with HSV in herpes lesions, mucosal surfaces, genital secretions, or oral secretions. 5 HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be shed from normal-appearing oral or genital mucosa or skin. 7,8 Generally, a person can only get HSV-2 infection during genital contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. However, receiving oral sex from a person with an oral HSV-1 infection can result in getting a genital HSV-1 infection. 4 Transmission commonly occurs from contact with an infected partner who does not have visible lesions and who may not know that he or she is infected. 7 In persons with asymptomatic HSV-2 infections, genital HSV shedding occurs on 10.2% of days, compared to 20.1% of days among those with symptomatic infections. 8
How To Treat Genital Herpes
Antiviral drugs are available by prescription only. There are numerous drugs available, but no current antiviral treatments can eliminate an HSV infection for good. Early treatment is very important with the first oral or genital infection. Its important to be aware that treatment does not prevent the virus from moving into the nerves and causing chronic infection. Treatment may, however, decrease the severity of the symptoms and shorten the length of time of the outbreak. Alternative treatments include topical treatments and intravenous therapy for severe cases.
Taking antiviral drugs does not prevent an infected person from passing it to their partner. Using protection when either partner is infected can help prevent transmission.

When To See A Healthcare Provider
If you have a cold sore, you do not necessarily need to make an appointment with your healthcare provider because the sore will likely go away on its own within a few days. However, make an appointment for an evaluation if you have signs and symptoms of cold sores that are persistent and/or extremely painful, especially if they are associated with fevers, swelling, bleeding, or oozing. Though cold sores are generally not serious and rarely cause complications, you’ll want to get outbreaks under control.
If you have any signs of genital herpes, however, you should see a healthcare provider within a few days, before the lesions go away.

People with symptomatic HSV-1 can have anywhere from several outbreaks per year to one every couple years or so, depending on the individual. Outbreaks tend to be worst during the initial herpes outbreak, as the body hasnt had time to produce its own immune response to herpes.

How Can I Reduce My Risk Of Getting Genital Herpes
If you are sexually active, you can do the following things to lower your chances of getting genital herpes:
- Be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who is not infected with an STD
- Using latex condoms the right way every time you have sex.
Be aware that not all herpes sores occur in areas that are covered by a latex condom. Also, herpes virus can be released from areas of the skin that do not have a visible herpes sore. For these reasons, condoms may not fully protect you from getting herpes.
If you are in a relationship with a person known to have genital herpes, you can lower your risk of getting genital herpes if:
- Your partner takes an anti-herpes medication every day. This is something your partner should discuss with his or her doctor.

Genital herpes can be transmitted by HSV-1 or HSV-2 and is a lifelong condition. The average incubation period for an initial herpes infection is four days after exposure, but may range from 2 to 12 days.
During this time, the newly infected person has no symptoms of the virus. Many studies have shown an increase in the number of people whose first episode of genital herpes is caused by HSV-1.
HSV-2 is characterized by viral cells that shed off of the infected genital area. HSV-2 shedding consists of approximately 14 episodes per year.

Most infected persons may be unaware of their infection in the United States, an estimated 87.4% of 14 to 49 year olds infected with HSV-2 have never received a clinical diagnosis. 6
The age-adjusted percentage of persons in the United States infected with HSV-2 decreased from 18.0% in 19992000 to 12.1% in 2015-2016. 2
