Why Do I Get Herpes Every Month

Risk Factors Linked To Cold Sores

Mayo Clinic Minute: Don’t suffer with shingles

Some people have more recurrent episodes of cold sores than others and the reasons are not always obvious, he said.

As mentioned before, sun exposure, stressful periods and fever have been linked to relapses of cold sores, but there are other factors, too.

People whose immune systems are depressed due to cancer treatment with chemotherapy are particularly at risk and are often given medications to prevent recurrences of cold sores as these individuals can suffer very severe outbreaks of cold sores that go into the mouth and throat, he said.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for cold sores.

This is because the herpes simplex virus remains in the nerve cells and we have no way to get the virus out of the nerve cells.

Hanna says in some cases, severe or very recurrent cold sores could leave little scars or pits in the skin.

If someone gets them all the time, say six or more times a year, well put them on a lower dose of an oral antiviral medication, he said.

Zoutman says topical ointments and creams for cold sores are also common.

They need to be applied every two to four hours during the day, making them difficult to use, he said, adding their effectiveness can also be limited.

Thus their impact is overall quite small.

Examples of these drugs include acyclovir, famciclovir and valacyclovir.

How Do People Get Genital Herpes

Infections are transmitted through contact with HSV in herpes lesions, mucosal surfaces, genital secretions, or oral secretions. 5 HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be shed from normal-appearing oral or genital mucosa or skin. 7,8 Generally, a person can only get HSV-2 infection during genital contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. However, receiving oral sex from a person with an oral HSV-1 infection can result in getting a genital HSV-1 infection. 4 Transmission commonly occurs from contact with an infected partner who does not have visible lesions and who may not know that he or she is infected. 7 In persons with asymptomatic HSV-2 infections, genital HSV shedding occurs on 10.2% of days, compared to 20.1% of days among those with symptomatic infections. 8

How To Treat Genital Herpes

Antiviral drugs are available by prescription only. There are numerous drugs available, but no current antiviral treatments can eliminate an HSV infection for good. Early treatment is very important with the first oral or genital infection. Its important to be aware that treatment does not prevent the virus from moving into the nerves and causing chronic infection. Treatment may, however, decrease the severity of the symptoms and shorten the length of time of the outbreak. Alternative treatments include topical treatments and intravenous therapy for severe cases.

Taking antiviral drugs does not prevent an infected person from passing it to their partner. Using protection when either partner is infected can help prevent transmission.

When To See A Healthcare Provider

If you have a cold sore, you do not necessarily need to make an appointment with your healthcare provider because the sore will likely go away on its own within a few days. However, make an appointment for an evaluation if you have signs and symptoms of cold sores that are persistent and/or extremely painful, especially if they are associated with fevers, swelling, bleeding, or oozing. Though cold sores are generally not serious and rarely cause complications, you’ll want to get outbreaks under control.

If you have any signs of genital herpes, however, you should see a healthcare provider within a few days, before the lesions go away.

Sores on or near the genital area can herald a sexually transmitted infection , or they may be the result of some other type of irritation. Most STIs are treatable, but it is difficult to know which one you may haveor if you have one at allunless you are trained in diagnosing them.

Many people do not freely communicate with sexual partners when it comes to STI status, so it’s best to get a definitive answer on what’s causing your symptoms.

If you have pain or bleeding with urination, pain with sexual activity, or if you notice that lesions in the genital area seem to be inflamed, you should call your healthcare provider, even if you have already been diagnosed with and treated for herpes.

Oral HSV-1 outbreaks usually involve the development of cold sores around the lips and mouth. The sores usually begin as an itching, burning sensation before forming into small blisters over several days.

How Can I Reduce My Risk Of Getting Genital Herpes

If you are sexually active, you can do the following things to lower your chances of getting genital herpes:

  • Be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who is not infected with an STD
  • Using latex condoms the right way every time you have sex.

Be aware that not all herpes sores occur in areas that are covered by a latex condom. Also, herpes virus can be released from areas of the skin that do not have a visible herpes sore. For these reasons, condoms may not fully protect you from getting herpes.

If you are in a relationship with a person known to have genital herpes, you can lower your risk of getting genital herpes if:

  • Your partner takes an anti-herpes medication every day. This is something your partner should discuss with his or her doctor.

The herpes virus is spread by skin-to-skin contact with a person who has the herpes virus:

  • Most often, from herpes sores or blisters
  • Less often, from normal looking skin where the virusfirst entered the body
  • The herpes virus enters the body through the:
    • Lining of the mouth
    • Regular skin that has small cracks or cuts

People with a weak immune system can get a herpesinfection more easily. A weak immune system is causedby some diseases and by somemedicines used to treat serious diseases.

People who dont know they have herpes can still spread the virus to others.

Whats The Typical Frequency Of Genital Herpes

The herpes simplex virus type 2, better known as genital herpes or HSV-2, is a sexually transmitted infection. Despite having no cure, a number of techniques are proven to reduce the frequency and duration of each genital herpes outbreak.

You may recognize a genital herpes outbreak by the appearance of blisters and lesions. Most people experience their first outbreak two to 12 days after initial exposure to the virus. After the blisters break, it may take up to four weeks for herpes ulcers to heal.

After the first outbreak, recurring outbreaks are common but dont last nearly as long. Sores tend to heal within three to seven days in recurring outbreaks, and the number of outbreak periods may even decrease over time.

Why Does Outbreak Frequency Vary

Its unclear exactly what triggers a herpes outbreak, although certain factors make them more likely. People without chronic physical and mental health conditions who exercise, practice good nutrition, and get adequate sleep are likely to have fewer herpes outbreaks. Women also usually have more frequent herpes outbreaks than men. Its thought the hormone fluctuations experienced during periods, pregnancy, and menopause may trigger herpes outbreaks.

Antiviral medications, like valacyclovir, can also help reduce the frequency of herpes outbreaks. People on these medications have up to 70-80% fewer outbreaks than they would without the medication. Their outbreaks also tend to be shorter than people who dont take these meds. How Is Genital Herpes Transmitted

Genital herpes can be transmitted by HSV-1 or HSV-2 and is a lifelong condition. The average incubation period for an initial herpes infection is four days after exposure, but may range from 2 to 12 days.

During this time, the newly infected person has no symptoms of the virus. Many studies have shown an increase in the number of people whose first episode of genital herpes is caused by HSV-1.

HSV-2 is characterized by viral cells that shed off of the infected genital area. HSV-2 shedding consists of approximately 14 episodes per year.

When HSV-2 is transmitted, the infected partner is usually asymptomatic. Studies consistently report that most people with a genital HSV infection are unaware of its presence.

The clinical features of female genital herpes can include:

  • Blisters may appear on the genitalia, vaginal opening, perineum, buttocks, upper thighs, or perianal areas.
  • In moist areas, blisters may rupture, leaving painful ulcers.
  • The vaginal tissue can become red and swollen.
  • General symptoms may include fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, or headaches.
  • Painful urination or difficulty with urination

Recurrent Episodes Of Genital Herpes

Recurrences are usually less painful and shorter in duration than the first episode of genital herpes. Over time, episodes usually become less frequent and may eventually stop altogether. Infections caused by HSV1 are less likely to recur in the genital area than infections caused by HSV2.

Recurrences may be triggered by:

  • no apparent reason noted.

How Common Is Genital Herpes

Genital herpes infection is common in the United States. CDC estimated that there were 572,000 new genital herpes infections in the United States in a single year.1 Nationwide, 11.9 % of persons aged 14 to 49 years have HSV-2 infection .2 However, the prevalence of genital herpes infection is higher than that because an increasing number of genital herpes infections are caused by HSV-1. 3 Oral HSV-1 infection is typically acquired in childhood because the prevalence of oral HSV-1 infection has declined in recent decades, people may have become more susceptible to contracting a genital herpes infection from HSV-1. 4

HSV-2 infection is more common among women than among men the percentages of those infected during 2015-2016 were 15.9% versus 8.2% respectively, among 14 to 49 year olds. 2 This is possibly because genital infection is more easily transmitted from men to women than from women to men during penile-vaginal sex. 5 HSV-2 infection is more common among non-Hispanic blacks than among non-Hispanic whites . 2 A previous analysis found that these disparities, exist even among persons with similar numbers of lifetime sexual partners. Most infected persons may be unaware of their infection in the United States, an estimated 87.4% of 14 to 49 year olds infected with HSV-2 have never received a clinical diagnosis. 6

The age-adjusted percentage of persons in the United States infected with HSV-2 decreased from 18.0% in 19992000 to 12.1% in 2015-2016. 2
